progress in Portugal;  troops declare war on gay protestors in Brazil;
 Pennsylvania becomes the 17th U.S. state to ban same-gender marriage, while
queer commitment ceremonies create controversy for both Christians and Jews
in Great Britain, and a fictional gay Catholic bishop dominates nominations
for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television's "Genie" awards;  Dole and
Clinton address lesbigay rights via dueling radio commercials;  Labour Party
candidate Tim Barnett is the only clear winner among 7 openly-gay candidates
in New Zealand's Parliamentary elections, while incumbent Chris Carter awaits
absentee ballots for the outcome of his hotly-contested reelection bid;  and
one of New Zealand's minor parties garners one-quarter of one percent of the
nation's vote -- the McGillicuddy Serious Party, which advocates compulsory

SEGMENT #2 -  Billboard for GLAMA feature [:05]  +  As U.S. President Bill
Clinton and Republican hopeful Bob Dole faced off this week in their second
and final debate before November's elections, audience members in the "Town
Hall" setting twice raised the question of civil rights protections for gays
and lesbians.  Although both candidates were quick to switch to other
subjects, and neither actually said the words "gay" or "lesbian", they did
discuss ENDA (the Employment Non-Discrimination Act) and grapple with the
concept of "special rights" versus "equal rights".  TWO's LUCIA CHAPPELLE
narrates excerpts of the queer-related portions of what was reportedly the
least-watched televised U.S. Presidential debate ever [5:55]

excerpt from their "Brave Boys") [:20]  +  The first annual GAY/LESBIAN
AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS were handed out earlier this month in New York City.
 TWO's CHRIS WILSON and PAM MARSHALL [with production assistance from
CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM, BRIAN HAMBURG and ADAM MICHAEL JAMES] provide an
on-scene report, featuring the words and music of CATIE CURTIS, MELISSA
ETHERIDGE, MICHAEL CALLEN (represented at the ceremonies by his life partner
and producer RICHARD DWORKIN), DAVID CLEMENT, FERRON, TOM ROBINSON, and THE
LAVENDER LIGHT BLACK AND PEOPLE OF ALL COLORS LESBIAN AND GAY GOSPEL CHOIR;
