************************************************* THIS WAY OUT Program #443 09-23-96 ************************************************* ==> Note slightly-different intro this week <== Program begins with about :30 of "Love & Marriage" by FRANK SINATRA/segues directly into the usual Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity ....................................................................... 1:40 SEGMENT #1 - NewsWrap: In the wee hours of September 21st, U.S. President Bill Clinton unceremoniously signs "The Defense Of Marriage Act" (DOMA) into law; global electronics giant IBM extends full spousal benefits to the gay and lesbian partners of its 335,000 employees; the Denver, Colorado City Council extends spousal benefits to partners of its queer employees, while a similar move in Atlanta, Georgia is challenged in court by the conservative Southeast Legal Foundation; The European Parliament expresses "profound indignation" at Romania's refusal to repeal its sodomy laws; Germany's Green Party is introducing measures in parliament to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination and to legally recognize queer couples; a sign of progressive times in Taiwan: the mayor of Taipei offers to officiate at a same-gender marriage ceremony, and directs a city department to help organize a lesbigay dance in a city-owned building; Sweden's major national lesbigay organization RFSL is apparently being targeted for violence by neo-Nazi groups; even though surrogate mom, baby, and the gay male couple in Edinburgh, Scotland who are parenting the child all seem to be doing fine, there's an uproar in Great Britain's tabloid press over the arrangement; while queer activists in Tasmania are fighting the last remaining sodomy law in Australia, the federal government is extending full spousal benefits to the partner of Tasmania's openly-gay Member of Parliament Bob Brown; the media buzz about the possibility of the title character on the U.S. ABC-TV sitcom "Ellen" coming out as a lesbian later this year apparently didn't help the ratings for the season's first episode last week; and, courtesy of their author Mike Morton, some anagrams for the words "Defense Of Marriage Act" demonstrate the queer tradition of joking our way through tragedy [compiled and written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to BRIAN NUNES, JASON LIN, RON BUCKMIRE, BJORN SKOLANDER, ANDY QUAN, REX WOCKNER and GREG GORDON, and anchored by BRIAN NUNES and CINDY FRIEDMAN] .............................................................................. ................. 10:15 SEGMENT #2 - "TWO" I.D. by pioneering gay performer Michael Greer [:30] + In a case of historic irony, the court case on same-gender marriage in Hawai'i and the federal legislative firestorm it inspired came to a head simultaneously. First, in the days following the Senate's approval of DOMA -- The Defense Of Marriage Act -- and the narrow loss of the pro-queer Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) -- gays and lesbians in cities around the U.S. took to the streets in protest. We have reports from MARY SALOME in San Francisco [with comments by organizer MICHAEL PETRELIS and CRYSTAL WESTON, an aide to San Francisco Supervisor Leslie Katz/about 2:20] and JON BEAUPRE in Los Angeles [includes comments by the MCC's Reverend TROY PERRY, ACLU attorney ANNE BRADLEY, AIDS activist J.T. ANDERSON and openly-gay "My So-Called Life" actor WILSON CRUZ/about 3:40] .......................................... 6:30 // segues directly to // SEGMENT #3 - The DOMA/ENDA news from the U.S. Capitol got the lion's share of the headlines, but the same-gender marriage trial in Hawai'i remains the spark that set it all in motion. Bookended by "activating" music by gay singers/songwriters ROMANOVSKY & PHILLIPS ("When Heterosexism Strikes"), TWO's CINDY FRIEDMAN and BRIAN NUNES review the last week of testimony in that landmark "Baehr vs. Miike" court trial in Honolulu .................................... 7:10 Closing Credits/Continuity ............................................................. 1:40 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME ........................................................................ 27:15 ----------------------Please note------------------------ Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
