SEGMENT #1 -  NewsWrap:  A discussion paper of The Uniting Church of
Australia, the country's third-largest Christian denomination, supports
ordination of openly-gay and -lesbian clergy and same-gender marriages, while
the Episcopal Church in the U.S. absolves retired Bishop Walter Righter on
heresy charges for his ordination of a sexually-active gay man, and the
Church of England's former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Robert Runcie admits
that he, too, ordained queer priests;  The U.S. House of Representatives, led
by homophobic California Republican Robert Dornan, reinstates the pre-1992
outright ban on military service by gays and lesbians and the requirement to
discharge military personnel testing positive for HIV -- passage in the
Senate, however, is questionable; openly-gay Republican Congressman Steve
Gunderson of Wisconsin responds to another personal attack on the House floor
by Dornan;  a House subcommittee holds hearings on the so-called "Defense of
Marriage Act", which a Clinton spokesperson says the President would likely
sign based on his desire to "strengthen families";  condemnation of "the
homosexual lifestyle" comes and goes with the Olympic torch: an anti-gay
resolution is rescinded in Wayne County, Georgia, and is passed and then
rescinded over the course of four days in Spartanburg County, South Carolina;
 the South African Parliament adopts a policy prohibiting discrimination
against gays, lesbians and women in the military, consistent with the new
South African Constitution banning sexual orientation discrimination;  and a
Brazilian mom marries her son's British lover to prevent the lover from being

Supervisors and subsequent assassination were pivotal events in the movement
for gay and lesbian liberation, would have been 66 years old this May 22nd.
 For those who weren't around, and those who need to remember the impact of
his life and death, "This Way Out" presents this birthday salute, featuring
excerpts from an interview conducted shortly after Milk took the oath of
office in early 1978, and reactions to his murder in November of that year
