proposal to ban homophobic hate speech, while the Canadian government says it

as suspects in a 5-year-old brutal gay bashing murder in Winnipeg;  there
have been more anti-queer marriage machinations in Hawaii, Michigan, South
Dakota and Alabama, but progress reports on legalizing same-gender couples in
Finland and The Netherlands;  the U.S. ban on military service by open gays
and lesbians continues to be challenged in court - this week Navy Lt. Richard
Watson's discharge was upheld by a U.S. district judge, while the 9th Circuit
Court of Appeals heard arguments in the case of Navy Petty Officer Mark
Phillips;  U.S. Chair of The Joint Chiefs of Staff General John Shalikasvilli
tells the Senate Armed Services Committee that discharging HIV-positive
servicemembers is "unfair and wasteful";  lobbying by a group of shareholders
leads U.S. health products giant Johnson & Johnson to agree to establish a
formal corporate policy banning sexual orientation discrimination;  and a New
York Times obituary of a renowned society photographer provides lessons in

past few years, annual St. Patrick's Day Parades have been mired in
controversy in some U.S. cities, as efforts by queer Irish groups to
participate have led to court orders, cancellations and violence.  As this
year's event approaches, TWO's JON BEAUPRE talks with JUSTINE SULLIVAN, JAMIE
PIERCE and RICK CRESSWELL of the Boston-based musical group QUEER CONSCIENCE
about the group's musical tribute to their hometown controversy, and other
cuts on their latest CD, "Gayja Vu" (includes excerpts from "Marchin' In
Southie", "Gay Music", "A Wonder" and the title track)
