"This Way Out" is the award-winning internationally distributed weekly gay and lesbian radio program, currently airing on over 90 stations in seven countries. Each weekly half-hour edition of "This Way Out," presented in a "radio magazine" format, includes NewsWrap, a summary of some of the major news events in or affecting the lesbian/gay community, compiled from a variety of publications and broadcasts around the world. Conversations with authors and performers, news feature stories, AIDS updates, humor, poetry, media criticism, readings from gay/lesbian literature, historical reviews, and other production features round out each program, all punctuated with a wide variety of music (especially self-produced recordings by openly-lesbian/gay performers, which rarely receive commercial radio airplay). With its fast-paced and highly-produced style of presentation, "This Way Out" offers information and perspective available from no other widely-distributed radio source, attracting not only the obvious target audience, but an impressive number of non-gay listeners as well. The program is co-produced and hosted by Greg Gordon and Lucia Chappelle, each with over 20 years of gay/lesbian news and public-affairs program production experience; their credits also include producing and anchoring live radio coverage via satellite of the 1979 and 1987 Marches On Washington For Lesbian and Gay Rights. Cindy Friedman and Brian Nunes, another pair of experienced broadcast journalists, co-anchor NewsWrap each week, with volunteer program producers from throughout the U.S., and from Canada, Australia, The Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand, and Great Britain contributing news and feature stories. "This Way Out" has been honored with multiple awards from the National Federation Of Community Broadcasters, The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Parents and Friends Of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG), and the Gay and Lesbian Press Association. With an initial grant from The Chicago Resource Center, weekly distribution of "This Way Out" began in April 1988 (originally as "inside/OUT"); additional start-up funding was provided by RESIST and by National Community Funds. Basic operating expenses for this all-volunteer program (a project of Overnight Productions, Inc., a nonprofit California corporation/Federal Tax ID #95-3786721) have since been funded by The Valley Business Alliance, The Funding Exchange, The Paul Rapoport Foundation, Christopher Street West, The David Geffen Foundation, The Morgan R. Pinney Trust, The Imperial Movie Capitol Court Of Hollywood, The Leo Model Foundation, The Colin Higgins Foundation (advised by the Tides Foundation), and The C.P. Estes Guadalupe Foundation. "This Way Out" is available free of charge each week to over 350 noncommercial public radio stations throughout the U.S. on the National Public Radio Satellite System's Channel 12 every Monday from 2:30 to 3:00 pm (Eastern time). The program is also distributed on tape by Pacifica Program Service to qualified stations. Distribution of program cassettes to libraries and other institutions, as well as to individual subscribers, may be arranged directly with the producers for a nominal charge. Stations with no locally-produced lesbian/gay programs use "This Way Out" as a regularly-scheduled weekly series; local gay/lesbian shows use selected segments of the program, and some stations air the full half-hour each week in addition to their locally-produced programming. Still others integrate segments from "This Way Out" into the station's regular news and/or public affairs programming. The weekly half-hour thus functions as both a regularly-scheduled program produced for, about, and by lesbians and gay men, and as a programming service for use by each station's news, cultural and public affairs producers. "This Way Out" is also becoming increasingly valuable as a sound archive, preserving the voices of and issues of concern to the gay and lesbian community for students and other researchers. P.O.
