TINSELTOWN'S QUEER! "News, Commentary and Gossip, With a Political Cutting Edge." "AND THE WINNER IS..." Tinseltown is abuzz with pre-Oscar hype as the world prepares to tune in to the global telecast of the annual Academy Awards. This year's broadcast will reach an estimated 1 billion people. It amazes me that a billion people can agree on anything, especially which television program to watch, but such is the power of the entertainment industry, and the entertainment that this industry produces. I LOVE the Oscars. As a matter of fact, in high school I used to plan my entire life around the Spring telecast (slight exaggeration). I actually went to the Oscars one year (legitimately), and to the Governor's Ball afterwards (not so legitimately). It was so exciting to be able to walk through the gathering crowd, flash our tickets, and pass beyond the masses of security personnel. We got to enter at the exact spot where the limousines were dropping off the numerous world-famous people in attendance, and we walked down the same red carpet past the same hoards of reporters lining the front of the same grandstands full of the same excited fans. Making an entrance at the Oscars was so much fun that my friend and I made THREE entrances. We actually snuck out through a corridor between the grandstands and made our way around to the main entrance--three times. We spotted two very cute guys in the grandstands that we adopted to be OUR fans. I'm most certain that these gentlemen were gay, and I'm most certain they knew the same of me and my host for the evening (I blew them a kiss and they waved vigorously). Oh, to be young, and gay, and at the Oscars. Speaking of awards shows, the stars come out (sort of) Sunday, March 12th for the GLAAD Media Awards (look for me, dahling...wouldn't miss them!). Among those to be honored by GLAAD (The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) are the late PEDRO ZAMORA for his participation in MTV's "The Real World III--San Francisco"; film and television producer STEVE TISCH (Forrest Gump, and the Celluloid Closet, forthcoming from HBO) for his personal contribution towards lesbian and gay equal rights; and many other awards, including the Outstanding Music Video going to MELISSA ETHERIDGE for "I'm The Only One," a hot love song which includes LESBIANS. I recently introduced myself to Melissa (she said, "Oh, YOU'RE The Tinseltown Queer.") and asked her how if feels to be one of America's most prominent lesbians and such a role model. Melissa had this to say: "It's very strange. The year has been going along, and I've been doing my work, and a lot of people have been saying thank you, and some really great things. I'm just living day-to-day, doing the best I can, and if that can be an inspiration to someone, that's great. Then I've done something good in my life." But you HAVE, Blanche, you HAVE. If only some of this year's Oscar nominees would set such an example! By the way, I understand that Melissa and her lover throw spectacular lesbian pool parties! Tickets to the GLAAD Media Awards start at $175.00 and can be purchased through Events Unlimited in Los Angeles (tell 'em I sent you, and ask to sit at my table) at (310) 996-1188. On a final note (for this column, anyway), tomorrow night I'm going before the cameras for my first National appearance as The Tinseltown Queer...I'll be singing my theme song on Santa Monica Blvd., while giving a tour of West Hollywood Nightlife for a forth-coming PBS documentary, "Pride Divide." Who says you can't be out IN FRONT of the camera!? As always, thanks for your love and support! Until next time...
