So what did we learn?

Much was made of the Gramm-Dole duel in front of the Christian Coalition
General Assembly. Phil Gramm talked about his stand on abortion and waved the
Republican National Coalition for Life pledge with his signature on it for
all to see. He urged participants to ask Bob Dole to sign it when he appeared
before them later that afternoon. In fact, a number of his supporters
embarrassed Senator Dole by shouting "Sign the pledge" when he appeared to
speak.

But that is about Republican presidential candidates and how they are
jockeying for position and trying to win the nomination. A year from now all
but one of those guys will be history. Not so the Christian Coalition--which
looks like it will be going very strong, due largely to growing control of
the Republican Party.

But for God's sake don't tell anyone. The CC is supposed to be non-partisan
and we are not supposed to know of its many ties with the GOP. Head honcho
Ralph Reed is constantly talking about not belonging to any party and that it
cannot tell the Republican Party what to do.

However! Ralph Reed may control the Christian Coalition, but he can not
control his boss, Pat Robertson.

On Friday night, Robertson clearly said--among other "take no prisoners"
exhortations--that his CC has dominant or substantial influence over the GOP
in 31 states...and that his goal is no less than 100% some time soon. Those
remarks were reported in some detail in today's Washington Post.

But today on Face the Nation, Bob Schieffer asked Ralph Reed about that
partisan and damning testimony. As is his custom, Mr. Reed basically denied
that Pat had said anything like that--adding some poppycock about wanting CC
members and "people of faith" to be active in both parties.

Meanwhile, Pat Robertson left for the Middle East.

We learned that "Bait and Switch"--slicker than ever--is alive and well in
Chesapeake, VA. And they are really feeling full of themselves. But don't
they call that Arrogance of Power?
