Subject: Christian Coalition pushes for Senate abortion victory
Date: November 4, 1995

The Christian Coalition has sent a urgent fax alert to members to mobilize
efforts to secure a majority vote on the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (HR
1833) when the Senate votes on Tuesday. Furthermore, "We believe that some
Senators will try to offer phoney [sic] amendments--such as only allowing
this procedure 'to save the life/health of the mother.' But such amendments
are TOTALLY UNNECESSARY and essentially gut the bill. A 'health of the
mother' exception is a gutting amendment because 'health' has been so broadly
interpreted by the courts, including the psychological health of the mother,
that it would result in partial-birth-abortion-on-demand... Although we won
big in the House (enough to override a veto), we may not have enough Senators
willing to vote against gutting amendments...This can become the first piece
of federal legislation to ban a form of abortion. AND WE ONLY HAVE A FEW DAYS
TO MAKE IT HAPPEN." 

The fax targeted 45 senators to be called, faxed, visited, etc. and told to
"PASS THE PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION ACT AND DEFEAT ALL AMENDMENTS": Heflin (AL),
Stevens (AL), Bumpers (AR), Pryor (AR) Campbell (CO), Brown (CO), Dodd (CT),
Leiberman (CT), Biden (DE), Roth (DE), Graham (FL), Nunn (GA), Coverdell
(GA), Kempthorne (ID), Harkin (IA), Kassenbaum (KS), Ford (KY), Breaux (LA),
Johnston (LA), Cochran (MS), Bond (MO), Baucus (MT), Exon (NE), Kerrey (NE),
Reid (NV), Bryan (NV), Domenici (NM), Bingaman (NM), D'Amato (NY), Moynihan
(NY), Dorgan (ND), Conrad (ND), Hatfield (OR), Hollings (SC), Daschle (SD),
Thompson (TN), Frist (TN), Hutchison (TX), Leahy (VT), Warner (VA), Gorton
(WA), Byrd (WV), Kohl (WI), Thomas (WY), and Simpson (WY). 

Pat Robertson said this last Thursday about the so-called "partial birth
abortions" on the "Newswatch Today" portion of the 700 Club: "How much like
the Nazis can they get!..This is an election year issue of major
proportions...To hear Vic Fazio put that nonsense out...I just can't believe
it!...It's a culture of death."
