                      LITERARY EXCHANGE
              WIMMIN OF COLOR WRITER'S COMPETITION

              DEADLINE Extended to - March 1, 2000

The Literary Exchange Wimmin of Color Writer's Competition is
the first of it's kind to increase the visibility of and to acknowledge the 
contributions for established lesbian of color writers to our movement and 
culture. This is our first year in what we hope will be an annual 
competition with monetary awards increasing each year.

Winners of the competition will be announced at our
First Annual Wimmin of Color Writer's Conference
May 6, 2000
Chicago, IL
Radisson Hotel

WRITING SAMPLE GUIDELINES
Applicants must submit a sample of poetry, fiction, scriptwriting, or essay 
as described below. Please do not put your name on any pages of
the writing sample.

JEWELLE GOMEZ AWARD for FICTION:
Open to published and unpublished writers.
Select up to 10 pages from a novel or a collection of short
stories double spaced pages that explore some aspect of being a womyn of 
color. (ie. Coming Out, Sexuality, Body Image, etc.)
$250 Award

CHERYL CLARKE AWARD for POETRY:
Open to published and unpublished writers.
Select at least 3 and no more than 5 pages of poetry that
uniquely express the Womyn of Color experience. ( ie. Sexuality, Coming Out, 
Butch/Femme, Leather, etc…)  Include at least two poems. Poetry submissions 
must be collated.
$250 Award

DR. SHIRLENE HOLMES AWARD for SCRIPTWRITING:
Open to unpublished or published play writers.
Select one act of a play or up to 20 pages that include some
aspect of the Womyn of Color experience.  Manuscripts must be double spaced 
and allude to, if not implicitly include, lesbian identifiable themes.  You 
are allowed 1 page extra for overview of play if longer than one act, to 
include character description, setting, background knowledge, and synopsis.
$250 Award + Stage Reading by A Real Read, Chicago's Premiere 
African-American Performance Ensemble.

BARBARA SMITH AWARD for LITERARY CRITICISM:
Open to published and unpublished writers.
One essay maximum 15 pages double spaced that explores some
aspect of Womyn of Color literature.  Use MLA to document sources.
$500 Award

LlSA MOORE CHAPBOOK AWARD for CHAPBOOK SUBMISSION
Open to writers who only have self-published books in fiction or
poetry. Send a copy of your book or manuscript up to 30 pages for
consideration of award.
$500 Award

NEW GENERATION AWARD for POETRY AND FICTION
Open to ages 16-25 year olds only
Poetry - 3-5 pages on some aspect of Young Womyn of Color
experience. Fiction - max. of 10 double spaced pages on some aspect of the 
young Womyn of Color experience.
(No submission fee required)
$150 Award.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES & REQUIREMENTS
In order to be considered for an award, you must submit the
following:
1. Three copies of a selection of your writing (see "Writing
   Sample")
2. Your application must have a cover page which should include:
    *Name, Address, Phone, Fax, E-mail  information.
    *List title(s) and number of pages of the writing sample
     that you are submitting with this application:
    *Genre of work submitted  (Poetry, Fiction, Scriptwriting,
     Literary Criticism, New Generation)
    *List publications, including date, in which your work has
     appeared:
     if you have published a book, include title, date published,
     and publisher.
    *Short Bio
3. You are eligible for an award from The Wimmin of Color
   Writer's Competition if :
    *You are a lesbian of color writer of fiction, poetry,
     playwriting, or critical essay
    *Your work includes some lesbian content
4. Check or Money Order of $10 payable to The Literary Exchange

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MANUSCRIPTS: (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY)
1.Three copies of the manuscript are required (as indicated
above). Each copy must be paper clipped together: NO BINDERS OR STAPLING. 
Each copy of your submission must be complete. Please do not send uncollated 
material.
2.Manuscripts must be typed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Fiction,
Playwriting, and Essay  manuscripts must be double spaced12-point font
3.All pages must be chronologically numbered on each page.
4.Only clear, readable copies are acceptable; otherwise
manuscripts will not be read.
5.Books, magazines, and photocopies thereof, will not be accepted.
6.Do not attach or bind the cover sheet to the manuscript.
7.Your name must NOT appear on any of the pages of your
manuscript, including any title page.
8.Manuscripts will not be returned.

DEADLINE
All completed applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2000
to be considered for Award.

SELECTION PROCESS
All applications will be reviewed by a panel of lesbian writers
who will remain anonymous until after the process has been completed. The 
names of applicants will not be known to the panelists.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS
The selection process will be completed by March 30, 2000. All
applicants will be notified of the results by mail. Please do not call the 
office.
