US $15.00 www.paintedleaf.com Reviewer: Cathie Dunsford. At last an international Queer Press Guide that goes beyond the shores of Great Turtle Island [USA]! It is great to have access to queer press addresses in Taiwan, Costa Rica, Korea, Aotearoa-New Zealand and Germany to name just a few of the international countries served by this new guide. However, it is not always obvious from the guide whether the reader can send in articles in English or the language of the country itself. This would help for further issues. Most presses covered desire submissions from writers or queries on the email which is great news for most of us but it is a good idea to read carefully the specific needs of each press and adhere to their guides for queries and submissions strictly. As an international publishing consultant, I know how vital this is for publishers and presses -- and so many authors cut their chances from the outset by not following these directions carefully enough. They are there for a reason and make life easier for presses dealing with huge numbers of submissions from hopeful writers and in some cases if you do not follow the guidelines, your work is dumped from the outset. Most presses provide detailed instructions for submissions, but some entries lack the necessary detail and it is hoped that this will be addressed in subsequent issues of the guide. I have recently returned from a book tour of Europe and there, as in the USA and the Pacific and UK, many lesbians and gays are bemoaning the lack of presses or the fact that their local press may have just died. But the news is not as bad as we may think, as editor Paul Harris points out in his introduction: "According to the most recent statistics, every ten days and 17 hours a gay or lesbian publication in the United States folds up. The good news is that every seven days and 14 hours another brave group of would-be publishers start another newspaper or magazine. As a result the gay and lesbian press has been one of the fastest growing areas of the print media in the past twenty years." Included is an essay by Barbara Dozetos, editor of Out in the Mountains, on "Why the Gay Press Matters," who points out that "the queer media is vital in its provision of images with which we can identify" and also comments: "The presence of a GLBT newspaper or magazine is also a sort of road sign. When we walk into a store or restaurant and see one of our publications amongst the others inside the door, we know that the establishment is at least welcoming." She accurately concludes: "The ultimate proof of the necessity of the queer press is in its continued existence." Kia ora! The Queer Press Guide not only lists the presses with their criteria for submission, but has articles on groups like The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, The Publishing Triangle [The Association of Lesbians and Gay Men in Publishing], and How to Self-Syndicate. This is a practical guide offering practical information and access to joining associations. Presses are listed under National, State by State and International Groupings with a section on HIV/AIDS publications also. This user-friendly publication is the most comprehensive listing of queer presses ever to appear in print and provides with each press details of phone and fax numbers and email and web site addresses, circulation figures, minimum pay scales for writers and photographers, advice from publishers and editors on what they are seeking and bills itself as providing "Listings from every continent apart from Antarctica." But there is a queer press in Antarctica-look out for Cowrie IV, "Icebreakers," where the ice queens have their day and their say -- watch this space!... The editor, Paul Harris, requests any presses not yet represented in his guide to contact him at QPGY2K@aol.com or by fax: USA-212-265-6845 for a form to complete, in order to be in the next edition. It would be a good idea to include agents handling queer authors as well, since some writers do not want the hassle of having to market their work and would rather leave that to a queer agent. However, for those wanting to make the most of their writing skills, get their work out to the widest possible audience, The Queer Press Guide 2000 is a great start.
