Although I have not followed the discussion on various lubricants very closely, I noticed the following and hope it is not a repeat posting. It is abridged from the 20 Apr. 1993 issues of the Advocate, p. 56: "Dr. Donald Hicks published a study in Lancet in Dec. 1985 which concluded: 'Nonoxynol 9 concentrations of 0.05% or more inactivated HTLV-III (now called HIV) in the test tube.' Unfortunately, this conclusion has often been misquoted and miscontrued to mean that products containing 0.05% nonoxynol 9 are effective at inactivating HIV. What the researcher actually said was that FINAL concentrations of nonoxynol 9 --after dilution in the anus, vagina, or mouth -- must be no less than 0.05%. Therefore a product which starts with a low concentration of nonoxynol 9 will be diluted by bodily fluids to a concentration so low that it will be ineffective at inactivating HIV. Recent research has shown that initial concentrations of nonoxynol 9 as low as 1% effectively kill pathogenic microorganisms such as HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes (B. North, Heterosexual transmission of AIDS, Ch. 23)...... (The following appeared in table form:) ====Percentage of nonoxynol 9 in popular lubricants======= Kimono Aqua Lube 0.88 Natural Lube 1.13 Ramses 3.00 Elbow Grease 0.78 Elbow Grease Gel 0.89 2-7 Glyde 0.16 ForPlay 0.92 Wet NONE Prepair 0.90" There was a lot of discussion about Wet's lack of nonoxynol 9 and he quoted the president of the firm stating that "effective immediately with lot number 1170, Wet will contain 1% nonoxynol 9."
