Within the next few months, the lesbian and gay community may win the freedom to marry. A positive and historic ruling in Baehr v. Miike is likely, which will make Hawaii the first state to legalize marriage for same-sex couples. With no time to lose, it is important that we mobilize to both respond to the verdict, as well as set the stage for an event that may indeed change the course of the fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. GLAAD would like to invite its GLAADAlert members, and all concerned people, including straight allies, family and friends, to work with GLAAD and the Freedom To Marry Coalition on winning the right for same-sex marriage. Here's what YOU can do to win the freedom to marry: 1. Contact Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (LLDEF) and get their free organizing materials including talking points, a brochure, background on the Hawaii case and a list of those who have already endorsed the Marriage Resolution. You can do this through the Freedom to Marry Web site (www.ftm.org) or from the Marriage Project of Lambda at (212) 809-8585, or from Lambda's Web site (www.lambdalegal.org). 2. Contact groups in your city and/or state that are working for same-sex marriage rights. Help coordinate and participate in actions, and share information and ideas with these groups to make the local response as powerful as you can. Lambda and GLAAD can help you and your groups with this. 3. Contact GLAAD about media trainings, so you can talk about same-sex marriage rights to your local press. GLAAD's media trainings can provide groups with the essential tools and skills to talk about same-sex marriage issues, as well as the broader struggle for lesbian and gay equality, and thereby strengthen our message to a broad audience. For more information, contact Cathy Renna, GLAAD's Training Services Manager, at (202) 986 1360, or via e-mail at renna@glaad.org. 4. Monitor your local media for stories on same-sex marriage, the Hawaii case, and even coverage of your lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Alert GLAAD to both positive and negative portrayals in television, radio, newspapers and magazines in your community. Save the clippings, or the tapes, and contact GLAAD at 1-800-GAY-MEDIA (800-429-6334). For more information on participating in "GLAAD to Get Hitched," contact Wonbo Woo, Communications Assistant, at (212) 807-1700, extension 24, or via e-mail at glaad@glaad.org, or simply reply to this message. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) glaad@glaad.org TO REPORT DEFAMATION IN THE MEDIA - Call GLAAD's Alertline at 1.800.GAY.MEDIA or go to the GLAAD Web Site at www.glaad.org and report through our Alertline Online.
