Subject: Missouri- anti-marriage bill passes House
Date: Fri, 17 May 1996 20:28:23 -0500

With a heavy heart, I must report that the Missouri House passed an
anti-same sex marriage bill on May 17, the final day of the legislative
session. The anti-same sex marriage bill was amended onto another piece
of legislation.

An unofficial vote tally was 142 for, 11 against and 10 absent.

The 11 state Representatives voting against the anti-same sex marriage bill
were Reps. Paula Carter, Joan Bray, Sheila Lumpe, Sue Shear, Nancy Farmer,
Dorothea Davis, Rita Days, Annette Morgan, Vernon Thompson, Tim Harlan and
(openly gay) Tim Van Zandt. Reps. Carter, Davis, Days and Thompson are
African-American.  Reps. Morgan, Thompson and Van Zandt are from Kansas City;
Harlan is from Columbia and the others are from metro St. Louis.

Last week's Missouri Senate vote was 26 for, 4 against and 4 absent. Three of
the four Senators voting against the bill (SB895), Sen. William Clay Jr., Sen.
J. B. "Jet" Banks and Sen. Phil Curls are African-American. The other Senator
voting against was Sen. Joe Moseley.

Thanks to all who let their views in opposition to the anti-same sex marriage
bills be known.

Missouri Governor, Mel Carnahan, a Democrat, has indicated that he will sign
the anti-same sex marriage bill.
