[ Moderator Note: This bill is STILL languishing on the governor's
desk. If you have not already called, please do so. You can live
in *any* state. Note the FAX number and email address too! ]

		       ** PLEASE FORWARD **
		   ** Expires: June 1, 1996 **

	    Author: Tim Pierce <t-pierce@uchicago.edu>

SB 1773, the Illinois anti-marriage bill, has passed the
Senate and the House of Representatives. As of May 22,
Governor Jim Edgar has taken no action on this
discriminatory bill. If he does not veto by June 28, it
will automatically become law.

Please contact Governor Edgar IMMEDIATELY to express your
opposition to this bill, and ask him to "veto Senate Bill 1773".

Non-Illinoisians are encouraged to join in as well as state residents.

HOW TO SPEAK UP:
----------------

  Call: (217) 782-6830 or (312) 814-2121
  Fax: (217) 524-1675
  E-mail: governor@state.il.us

You can also write to Governor Edgar through the Web:

Because time is so short, use one of these methods to
contact the governor. However, please consider also
sending the governor a snail-mail letter. Postal mail is
generally taken more seriously than phone calls or
  e-mail. Governor Edgar's address is:

	Governor Jim Edgar
	Illinois State House
	Springfield, IL 62706

POINTS TO MAKE:
---------------

  * Tell the governor that you are appalled by the anti-gay,
    anti-marriage legislation that right-wing extremists
    have pushed on the country.

  * Point out that the Supreme Court's recent ruling in
Romer v. Evans spoke out harshly against unequal legal
    standards for homosexuals and heterosexuals.

  * Encourage the Governor to consider the veto statement
released by Colorado governor Roy Romer.

  * Let him know that legislation like this must not be
allowed to pass without substantial public discussion.

If the governor vetoes this bill, it will not be considered
by the state legislature again until the fall term. That
gives us several more valuable months to educate the public
about the marriage issue. This education period is
CRUCIAL. Please help!
