STONEWALL 25 The International March on the United Nations to Affirm the Human Rights of Lesbians & Gay People. Sample Copy for 1993 Pride Guide and Programs COME HOME TO STONEWALL! On Sunday June 26, 1994, over a million lesbians, gays, bisexuals and their supporters will converge on New York City for an International March on the United Nations to Affirm the Human Rights of Lesbian and Gay People. In addition, glorious drag queens, colorful floats, AIDS-support groups, marching bands and the full rainbow of our communities will mark the event as New York's 25th Annual Lesbian/Gay Pride weekend. We commemorate the evenings of June 27-28, 1969 when a small band of colored drag queens came to the aid of their dyke sister when she refused to enter the police van outside The Stonewall Inn. They were soon joined by a crowd of over 300 young gays, lesbians and street people who fought back against the cops and set off three days of street protests known as the "Stonewall Riots" that energized the fledgling Homosexual Rights movement into the modern Lesbian/Gay movement. The cry of "Remember Stonewall" has sounded across the Americas and around the world as far as Africa, Russia and Japan. Since 1970, annual Pride marches and rallies remember the joy and courage of the people who fought for liberation before us and of those who still carry on beside us today. New York City in late June and early July will host the largest gathering of Lesbian/Gay events ever assembled. Gay Games IV will bring over 12,000 athletes from 50 countries, many competing in sanctioned events at the international level. The International Lesbian/Gay Association will hold its annual conference assuring the presence of representatives of as many as 1,000 delegates from over 30 nations to discuss the global agenda and immediate needs of Lesbian/Gay groups in many countries. Over 20 other Lesbian/Gay organizations including bisexuals, choruses, leatherpeople, parents, people of faith and stamp collectors are planning gatherings of their own. The city will come alive with concerts, art and historical exhibits. Most importantly, local Stonewall 25 events will take place worldwide throughout 1994 in communities large and small. A Global Calendar will link these events to declare the strength and diversity of the Lesbian/Gay community. Here, in (your city or town) the Pride Committee is already planning special activities to celebrate the 25 years of growth and empowerment since Stonewall. (Expand as available information allows.) With similar athletic, cultural, educational, health-related, religious/spiritual and political events being planned in hundreds of town and cities, Stonewall 25 will truly be our community's first Global Celebration of Lesbian/Gay Pride and Protest.
