STONEWALL 25, INC. 208 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011-7799 IMMEDIATE RELEASE FURTHER INFORMATION 212 439-1031 International Meeting Sets Demands for Stonewall 25 March The organizers of Stonewall 25 have established the political demands for an International March on the United Nations to Affirm the Human Rights of Lesbian and Gay People. At a series of meetings held during the 14th Annual Conference of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) meeting in Paris from July 12 to 18, Stonewall 25 developed the basic document for the first great international march of the Lesbian/Gay movement in New York on Sunday, June 26, 1994 which is the centerpiece of the Stonewall 25 celebration. The demands which receieved full support from the 250 delegates from over 30 countries, are based on the inclusion of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people and persons living with HIV/AIDS in the protections of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the fundamental rights statement of the United Nations. "If the organizers in New York are serious about the Stonewall 25 march being a global event," explained Gro Lindstad of Norway who chaired the session, "it is absolutely essential that important decisions be made in an international forum." The march is the largest single event of Stonewall 25: which will see hundreds of events commemorating the Stonewall riots in 1969 which are considered the birthplace of the modern Lesbian/Gay movement. These events, both in New York and around the world, will take place throughout June and July 1994 with the weekend of June 25-26, 1994 set aside for the festivities in New York. Pride committees across the United States are planning to shift their dates so that over a million Lesbian and Gay people and their supporters are expected for the International March and Rally, which will be the largest Lesbian/Gay event in history. Gay Games IV, the 16th Annual Conference of ILGA and the Stonewall Exhibition Project are among the more than two dozen political, cultural, health-related, athletic and spiritual events already scheduled for New York during the last week in June and the first week of July, 1994. In addition, Stonewall 25 has published a Global Calendar of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Events for 1992-1994 which will support the organizing efforts of Lesbian/Gay worldwide. "Stonewall 25 is our opportunity to emphasis the strength and diversity of our movement, explained Hartmut Schnknecht of Christopher Street Berlin, organizers of Berlin pride and of next year's Europride '93. "It is important to use the publicity generated by the big actions to focus media attention of the fact that we are everywhere."
