Sam's Note: Whether you plan to contribute or not, you might try calling 1-800-NYC-1994 just for their informational recording (keep in mind though that they have to pay for the toll-free call). They have interesting facts about the history of the rainbow falg as well as Stonewall. I should also add that I don't know much about this Foundation although I plan to make several contributions as Xmas gifts. If anyone knows anymore about them, I'd appreciate the info. ===================================================== The Stadtlanders Foundation is going to great lengths to raise money for AIDS charities nationwide. Thirty feet wide by a mile in length to be precise. That's the size of the rainbow flag the Foundation commissioned for New York City's Stonewall 25 international March on the United Nations on June 26, 1994. And while the size of the flag is considerable, the scope of the project is even more so. Dubbed "Raise The Rainbow," the project aims to collect over half a million dollars for AIDS organizations. Funds will be raised through tax deductible contributions of $50-or-more by individuals interested in carrying the flag up the Fifth Avenue march route. Every dollar donated will go directly to The Stadtlanders Foundation HIV/AIDS Community Crant Fund, to help support non- profit AIDS organizations nationwide. Grant distributions will be made by the Foundation's 16-member AIDS Community Advisory Board, comprised of community leaders, PWA's and chaired by the NAMES Project founder Cleve ]ones. Anyone wishing to Raise The Rainbow at the Stonewall 25 March and raise money for AIDS charities at the same time, should fill out the coupon on the preceding page or phone 1-800-NYC-1994. The Stadtlanders Foundation is hoping you'll come through with flying colors. SOMEWHERE OVERSEEING THE RAINBOW. Every project starts with a vision. And vision like this comes from the soul. That's why The Stadtlanders Foundation is proud to be working with two men whose ideas and ideals have already done so much to further the cause of Lesbian and Gay freedom and the fight against AIDS. Overseeing creation of the flag will be Gilbert Baker, mover, shaker and maker of the original six-color rainbow flag which has become an international symbol of Lesbian and Gay pride. Cleve Jones, founder of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, will work with Raise The Rainbow as chair of The Stadtlanders Foundation AIDS Community Advisory Board. Together, the two promise the project will be the biggest rainbow happening since Dorothy in Oz. A REBELLION CARVED IN STONE. On a hot June night in 1969, a raid incited a riot that sparked a rebellion that was felt around the world. It all happened at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street in New York's Greenwich Village. Instead of going along with routine police arrests, patrons of the inn fought back. And the Lesbian/Gay rights movement, as we know it today, was born. The 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion will be celebrated in New York City on Sunday, June 26, 1994. Formally known as the International March on the United Nations to Affirm the Human Rights of Lesbian and Gay People, the march will be the community's largest single event ever. It will be a mobilization of epic proportions. The kind that should fire the spirit, deepen the drive and show the unity of a community committed to affirming its rightful place in the world.
