Williams Executive Director Director/Public Relation RESOLUTION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE (NAACP) WHEREAS, the NAACP has historically supported efforts to eliminate unfair discrimination and to protect the civil rights and human rights of individuals; and WHEREAS, thousands of Americans are denied opportunities enjoyed by other Americans because they are homosexual or because they are presumed to be homosexual; and WHEREAS, lesbian and gay Americans seek protections from discrimination in the military and seek equal opportunities in the areas of employment, housing and access to public services; and WHEREAS, there will be a national demonstration this year to support the principle that Americans can work and live together despite their differences, including difference as to sexual orientation; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the NAACP supports the efforts to end discrimination against gay men and lesbian Americans in areas of American life where all Americans deserve equal protection and equal opportunity under the law; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVE, that the NAACP supports the elimination of the requirement that homosexuals declare their sexual preference on forms required for serving in the military; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the NAACP endorses and will participate in the upcoming national demonstration for equal and civil rights for all citizens regardless of sexual orientation.
