This is an updated list of events scheduled during the week of the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. Some of these events are sponsored by the Committee for the March on Washington (MOW) while others are sponsored by various organizations to coincide with the March. I do not work for the MOW office, but I have tried to verify as much of this information as possible. -Jim Please note: If there is a particular event that you do not want to miss, be sure to contact the sponsoring group ahead of time to make sure the schedule has not been changed. Some effort was made to group the events by time of day and type of event. Look for MOW publications once you get to DC the week of the March as to specific times and locations. A good local information source is the Washington Blade which is the Gay Weekly of the Nation's Capital. The week before and after the March will be used to lobby. If you would like to visit your Congressional representatives and lobby, contact the MOW office, the Human Rights Campaign Fund or the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to sign up for training. See "Notes on Washington, DC" at the end of this listing for some hints and tips on the city, transportation and important places. If you are aware of any additions/deletions/changes to this list, please let me know. See you there, Jim Hubbs jeh@aplcenmp.apl.jhu.edu 301-317-3894 evenings and weekends The Committee for the March on Washington Office in Washington, DC can be reached the following ways: Phone: 202-628-0493 - Your dime, save them some dough Toll Free: 800-832-2889 TTY: 202-628-0471 FAX: 202-628-0472 Mailing Address: MOW PO Box 34607 Washington, DC 20043 Abbreviations used: G & L - Gay and Lesbian GLB - Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual HRCF - The Human Rights Campaign Fund UFMCC - Universal Fellowship Metropolitan Community Church MOW - March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. For example, there are four 3rd and D Street intersections in DC. The United States Capitol Building sits at the center of all of this. Numbered streets run north/south with the numbers starting from the center. Letter streets (A - I and K - W) run east/west starting at the center. After W the east/west streets take on alphabetical names (Adams, Belmont, Clifton, etc.). Overlaid on this grid pattern are diagonal streets mostly named after US states. These connect the many traffic circles in town. There are many major thoroughfares and highways around DC. One that is used as a reference point of sorts is the Beltway. The Beltway is an Interstate highway that encircles DC at about a ten mile radius from the center of town. It is made up of Interstate 95 on the east side and Interstate 495 on the west side. The political elite of DC would probably tell you that all real power in the universe is contained within the confines of the Beltway. Most of the MOW events are located around the Mall in the center of town, while others are located in areas served by the DC subway system (Metro). The Metro is made up of several different train lines indicated by a color (Blue, Orange, Red, Yellow and Green). Some of the lines overlap for parts of their routes. Hence some Metro train stations are serviced by two lines simultaneously (Blue/Orange and Green/Yellow). From the outside the stations are usually marked by a black pillar with a large white "M". All stations have both escalators and elevators. Metro does not use tokens or coins. Passengers must purchase Farecards at the stations. Farecards can be bought for any dollar amount. They work like debit cards. You put $5.50 into the Farecard machine, get the Farecard and then you can use it until you have spent $5.50 worth of travel on the system. The cost per trip is based on where you enter the system and where you exit it. Also fares vary by time of day (rush hour/non-rush hour). There are fare charts mounted in the stations to let you know how much you will need to put on your Farecard. Here's the real kicker with the Metro. On weekdays it runs from 5:30 AM to midnight, on weekends it runs from 8 AM to midnight. That makes late nights kind of tough for the subterranean travelers.
