We are also please to present, in cooperation with Suzy Capo and Andre Fischer, MIX BRASIL: 3rd Festival das Manifestações da Sexualidade, which will tour cities throughout Brazil October through December, 1995. A significant portion of the festivals will consist of programs designed by Guest Curators. Each Curator/Curatorial team will be paid an honorarium. In addition to film and video work, we strongly encourage the submission of multimedia installations, interactive projects, audio-visual projects, film and video performances and any other alternative explorations of the moving image. The role of Guest Curators will be not only to curate, but also to take an active part in designing and publicizing the Festival. Guest Curators are especially encouraged to bring new communities and new venues to the Festival. Submissions by people of color are strongly encouraged. Curatorial proposals must be postmarked by May 15, 1995. guidelines for curators Your program can be designed in any way you like, but must adhere to the following guidelines. € Optimum running time: 75 minutes € At least 50% of running time must consist of New York premieres. € Films, videos and other forms of cinematic exploration are eligible. € Exclusively retrospective programs are not eligible. € The program must involve sexualities which transgress the heterosexual norm, either via the sensibility of the maker or the subject matter or both. € Emphasis must be placed on shorter, non-conventional films and tapes. € Feature length films are not eligible. € Curators may include their own work in the program. € Mixed gender programs are encouraged. € Programs can be curated by one or more curators. € Curators should be aware that they will have the responsibility to publicize their programs. Non-New York based curators should either commit to being here a month before the Festival or preferably collaborate with someone based in New York. € Post-screening discussions and panels are encouraged but lectures and talks alone are not eligible. how to apply Send a concise written proposal for a program of work that you would like to curate. As much as possible, please include the titles and brief descriptions of particular works. If you cannot name specific works, please explain as completely as possible the unifying idea, theme, regional approach or other consideration by which you will organize your program, explaining some of the aesthetic choices you might make as well as a strategy for obtaining the work. Also describe your plans for publicizing the program. We strongly encourage bringing the program to communities and venues in the New York area in addition to the core venue. If you would like to develop a site-specific program, please detail it in your proposal. Beyond operating expenses incurred by the Festival, Guest Curators are entitled to all proceeds from additional, off-site screenings. Please include a resume. Guest Curators are responsible for locking their programs and obtaining completed application forms and press materials for all films, videos, installations, etc. by August 1, 1995. All prints in satisfactory projection condition and all exhibition tapes must be delivered by October 10, 1995. Deadlines for delivery of installation and performance projects will be worked out on a case-by-case basis. Guest Curators are responsible for locating new work and should be aware of what new films and tapes. The Festival Committee will receive new work, some of which it will pass along to the Guest Curators to preview, but the final programming choices will be made by the Guest Curators. The Guest Curators will, if possible, introduce thier programs at the Festival.
