Espin, Ph.D. President Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian and Gay Issues Division 44 of the American Psychological Association May 4, 1994 Dear Colleague, The Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian and Gay Issues, Division 44 of the American Psychological Association (APA) is sponsoring "You Say You Want A Revolution: Preparing Mental Health Providers and Social Scientists for the Policy Debates of the 90s", an Institute during the National Lesbian and Gay Health Conference on June 21 in New York. An important goal of the Institute is to bring together mental health professionals and social scientists concerned about lesbian and gay issues in order to build cross- disciplinary alliances. The Institute has three major foci: (1) training participants on the ethical and effective use of empirical research results in combatting attacks on lesbians and gay men that often use the rhetoric of science while perpetrating misinformation and stereotypes; (2) training in appropriate modes of public policy advocacy for professionals in three specific domains -- state initiatives, national health care, and international human rights; (3) the development of a lesbian and gay issues research and services advocacy agenda targeted at U.S. government. I want to invite you to register for the Institute and also to join a multi-disciplinary working group that will generate the ideas for a research and services advocacy agenda to which Institute participants will respond. I have enclosed registration information for the Institute and a form for responding to our invitation to join the research and services advocacy agenda group.
