Subj: Queer Grad Student Conference Call for papers Department of English The University of Texas at Austin PAR 108 Austin,Texas 78712-1164 (512) 471-4991 August 18, 1993 Dear Friends and Colleagues, We are pleased to announce that the University of Texas at Austin will be hosting "SEIZING THE MOMENT: The Fourth Annual Graduate Student Conference on Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual and Gay Studies," from March 3-5, 1994. For the uninitiated, the conference is an interdisciplinary, multi-media, academic/political gala featuring the diverse work of graduate students across the nation. Given the success of the past three meetings at Milwaukee, Urbana-Champaign, and Minneapolis-St. Paul, we anticipate an intellectually and socially exciting event. We hope you'll join the fun. Enclosed is a call for papers; please photocopy and post where appropriate, and share. Our title is at once playful and serious. The "Moment" of queer visibility/mainstreaming announced by various periodicals may be rather fleeting as recent events attest. Since next year will also be the 25th anniversary of Stonewall, it seems appropriate to consider old and new strategies of living and loving. We invite papers, panels, workshops, and roundtables on _any_ queer studies topic. Last year, the following topics were decided missing or under-represented: bisexuality, transgender issues, queer studies as a methodology rather than identity politics, Canadian literature, science fiction, medieval studies, and legal discourse. Someone suggested panels focusing on certain theorists. AIDS and activism remain priorities. These are merely suggestions. We also welcome collaborative efforts. Austin is a progressive and beautiful city, and we will take advantage of the local music scene and nightlife. In addition to our keynote speakers, local performers will baffle and bemuse. While I won't reveal any more details, plan to be here by Thursday for a performance of "The Bible Belt and other Accessories" -- need I say more? Seize the moment! We look forward to seeing you. Sincerely, /SS Kenneth Kenneth Kidd, for the Seizure Committee Call for Papers Seizing the Moment The fourth National Graduate Student Conference on Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual, & Gay Studies Senate investigations of the "gays in the military" issue, the 1993 March on Washington, the 25th anniversary of Stonewall.... _The Nation_ labelled this historical juncture "The Gay Moment". Why only a "moment"? Waht do they mean by "gay"? Who knows? Who cares? The question is what are _we_ going to do about it? The mainstream media attention adn public scrutiny currently attending work in bisexual, transgender, gay and lesbian studies inflects the work of scholars in these fields with a queer urgency as well as with particular concerns. We invite abstracts outlining possible contributions to this interdisciplinary, multi-media, social/political/academic event to be held March 3-5, 1994, at the University of Texas at Austin. We are especially interested in papers exploring mass cultural representations and appropriations of queer experience (in this "gay moment" and others), but welcome proposals addressing any aspect of transgender, gay, bisexual, and lesbian studies.
