WHAT IS CAPACCESS? CapAccess is an interactive public access network providing information and education for the metropolitan DC area. It integrates diverse media and allows access to a wide variety of free public information about government, health and human services, libraries, and education. In addition, CapAccess allows the exchange of electronic messages and participation in public forums on timely issues. All that is needed to access CapAccess is a computer and modem. WHY IS CAPACCESS IMPORTANT TO OUR COMMUNITY? CapAccess is part of a national movement towards civic networks which help citizens with their daily lives. It provides electronic mail (email) and access to a variety of local information such as government services of the District of Columbia and Arlington County and library services of Montgomery County. Opinions about local and national issues such as telecommunications policy and health reform are aired via online forums. Numerous local schools are using it to share information about activities and to teach students how to access information from around the corner and around the world. Organizations are using it to coordinate services and extend outreach efforts. In addition, CapAccess is serving as a testbed for several national and local projects. HOW DO YOU USE CAPACCESS? To visit without registering, dial 202/785-1523 and logon , password . (Communications parameters: up to 14,400 baud; 8-n-1; VT100 terminal emulation; or telnet cap.gwu.edu; internet protocol 128.164.140.32). You will note that email and some areas are accessible only to registered users. To become a registered user with a personal access code, complete the registration and agreement forms and mail them to CapAccess. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CAPACCESS? CapAccess is governed by a Member Council and Board of Directors. More than 100 volunteers, as individuals and representatives of a variety of public and private groups, participate in various committees to provide a wide range of technical and informational resources. CapAccess is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported entirely through contributions and volunteer services. The George Washington University provides technical support and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Annenberg/CPB Project are providing partial funding for the initial implementation. CapAccess welcomes additional funding from corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals. HOW CAN YOU HELP? You can help by volunteering your time and/or making a donation. Individual donations begin at $35--make checks payable to GWU/CapAccess. Donations are encouraged, but are not required for access.
