This list is open to all working writers who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered, for their colleagues, and for working writers covering the queer scene. Discussion is focused on internal union business, shoptalk, industry news, queer action, civil liberties, and the labor movement. No message to this list should be crossposted to any other NWU list. We urge members to subscribe to all lists relevant to their work, so crossposting is never necessary. Consider also subscribing to nwu-chat, the general NWU discussion mail-list. Send a message to: listserv@netcom.com It should have this single line: subscribe nwu-chat This is not a good place to post samples of your work. There are other mail-lists and newsgroups offering support for new writers. This is a good place for discussing how to enforce lawful payment for your work and to gain redress for unlawful discrimination. We are outspoken advocates of freedom of speech. Working writers know how to make a telling point without irritating noise. The National Writers Union is a trade union for freelancers: tech writers, journalists, book authors, poets, novelists, ghostwriters, corporate writers -- professionals in all genres. We have about 4000 members. NWU grievance officers have recovered close to $1,000,000 for our members. Our Book and Journalism Campaigns have databases for agents and jobs. Our standard contracts -- the free- lancers' equivalent to collective bargaining -- are changing entrenched industry practices that have undermined writers' rights. Our New Technologies Campaign aims to halt digital piracy and define ethical practices while the media are still young. Membership in the NWU is open to all qualified writers, and no one shall be barred or prejudiced within the union on account of age, disability, gender, ideology, literary genre, nationality, race, religion, or sexual orientation. You are eligible for membership if you have published a book, a play, three articles, five poems, a short story, or an equal amount of newsletter, publicity, technical, commercial, government, or institution copy. You are also eligible for membership if you have written an equal amount of unpublished material and are actively writing and attempting to publish your work. [Last updated Wed Jan 4 9:33:41 1995]
