[GLMGLBCN] 6/11/95 The Great Lakes/Midwest Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual College Network was implemented (March 1995) mainly to connect students, faculty, staff, and alumnae of Midwestern universities and colleges. The list is a part of the Midwest University and College Organization Networking Task (MUCONT) being conducted as a special project by the UIC GLB student group (PRIDE) in concert with the Subcommittee on Advocacy and Networking, the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues (CCSLGBI) for the University of Illinois at Chicago. The impetus and initiation for this project came out of the Midwest Regional BLG College Conferences (1994 Earlham College, Indiana; 1995 Southern Ill. U--Carbondale) and additional local UIC and Chicago area conferences and less formal discussions in regard to the general need for improved inter-campus communication and networking. SCOPE OF THE MUCONT AND THE GLMGLBCN -- How was the project area defined? It was arbitrary -- as most such designations tend to be. The "model" that was employed here was the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, which was the law passed by Congress prior to the ratification of the Constitution that guided the formation of the eventual states of the upper Midwest. The original NWO region included the eventual states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota (in part), Ohio, and Wisconsin. The territory was later extended to include the eventual states of Iowa, the rest of Minnesota, and all of North and South Dakota east of the Missouri River. Nebraska was technically not part of the NWO territory, but since it is well tied to the states in the NWO region, Nebraska is included as well. In summary, the scope of the list is intended to follow this scheme, but subscribers from outside the region are permitted. GUIDELINES FOR POSTING -- The GLMGLBCN list is not intended to be either a high volume or a "chit chat" list. However, sending a request for chatting or for a discussion topic is certainly fine. Just remember to keep items that are not of general interest off the list. Please e-mail directly to whomever you wish to dialog with -- if what you're essentially doing is a one-on-one, in other words. When posting topics for discussion or news bits, please keep in mind the volume of the current postings. Post the less important or less general (interest) items during lower volume periods. If the volume level becomes unmanageable at some point, we may create a separate list for GLB college organization officers in order to relieve them of excessive mail and yet continue to network, but that will only be implemented if the need should arise. OTHER NOTES ABOUT THE LISTSERVER -- = The list is not moderated, but = To post on the list, you must be a subscriber. = Postings are cataloged (and held) for a month; you may retrieve these (explained in the subscription confirmation letter) from listserv@uicvm.uic.edu =To subscribe, send a message to: listserv@uicvm.uic.edu With a message body consisting of: subscribe glmglbcn =To unsubscribe, send a message to: listserv@uicvm.uic.edu And in the body of the message, type: signoff glmglbcn
