[DONT-TELL] Listname: Don't Tell, Military Listowner: Unknown <> Subscribe-via: Dont-Tell Request Administriva: Dont-Tell Request The dont-tell list is an e-mail distribution list for people concerned about the effects that the new military policy known as "don't ask/don't tell" will have at academic institutions. This new policy forbids students at the nation's service academies or enrolled in campus ROTC programs from revealing truthful information about themselves. Below is a direct quote from the official summary of the policy: Commanders can initiate investigations into alleged homosexual conduct when there is credible information of homosexual acts, prohibited statements or homosexual marriage. The very idea of "prohibited statements" stands in sharp contrast to the tradition of academic freedom at American universities. Topics appropriate for the dont-tell list might include: 1) Strategies for challenging the don't ask/don't tell policy at all levels of government. 2) Strategies for persuading college and university administrators to confront the issues presented by the presence of ROTC programs on their campuses. 3) Discussion of specific problems presented by limitations on permissible speech in academic and non-academic programs on campus. 4) Assistance for students and/or faculty who find their own expression limited by the "don't ask/don't tell" policy.
