CA: GLSEN to hold safe schools training Reply-To: listserver@channelq.com Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 16:24:40 -0700 From: "Channel Q" To: Multiple recipients of GLAAD_Pub - Sent by Subject: [GLAAD] [GLAADLines] 07/10/00 GLAADLines GLAADLines Contact: Bob Findle, GLAAD (323) 658-6775 ext. 31 findle@glaad.org http://www.glaad.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 10, 2000 News and Breaking Stories about the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community [unrelated items omitted] TRAINING FOR SAFE SCHOOLS FROM GLSEN TRAINING FOR SAFE SCHOOLS FROM GLSEN: The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), along with Amnesty International USA and the University of Minnesota Human Rights Resource Center, is presenting a two-day training conference on how to make schools safe for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and teachers. It is July 14 and 15 and being held at San Francisco State University. Scott Hirschfeld, GLSEN director of education, said the conference was planned to coincide with the release of GLSEN's new "Lunchbox" program, which is a comprehensive teacher training kit for ending anti-gay bias in schools. He also said the conference is unique because of the tie-in with Amnesty International. "The over-arching theme of the conference is human rights - looking at LGBT rights from that angle," he said. "One of things will we look at is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights developed by the United Nations after World War II. We will hold that standard against the reality for LGBT students today. Maybe it will be an insightful for some people." The conference will have three components. Part one is "A Human Rights Perspective," which will look at building school cultures based on human rights, not just civil rights. Part two, "Teacher Training," includes topics such as working through resistance, answering difficult questions, inclusive policy development and action planning. "Curricular Inclusion of LGBT Themes," part three, examines how to make lesson plans and activities that explore LGBT issues and that are comprehensive. Contact Hirschfeld for more information about the conference or GLSEN's work at 212-727-0135, ext. 108, or access www.glsen.org __________________________________________ GLAAD is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of individuals and events in all media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
