Back in June of 1997 (possibly 1998), CSS-NYS was told about numerous anti-gay and racist remarks in that year's Mechanicville HS year book. CSS-NYS reviewed the year book at the Mechanicville Public Library and verified the remarks. The librarian expressed shock. CSS-NYS then sent a letter and a package of materials regarding anti-gay abuse in schools to the City of Mechanicville School Board (registered mail). Our offer to consult with the administration was never accepted nor was our letter acknowledged, as requested. Last fall I was talking to a longtime tenured teacher at Mechanicville HS. He stated to me that homophobia is rampant at his HS. In other words, if are gay, you cannot go to the prom with your partner. If you cannot find a date to the prom, you can't go. If you want to go with a group of friends, too bad, no sale.
