FL: News from GLSEN Miami From: RLoupo@aol.com Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 00:43:53 EDT Subject: GLSEN/Miami News To: Glsenmiami@aol.com GLSEN/Miami Has Had A Busy Spring! March 31 GLSEN/Miami hosted a picnic at Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne for approximately 60 glbt youth and their allies from schools and support groups throughout Miami-Dade County. Hats off to school counselor Lois Dilibero for all her hard work! GLSEN/Miami was invited to be a Community Co-sponsor for the highly successful Gay & Lesbian Film Festival of Miami. As such, GLSEN/Miami Community Spokesperson Brian Hentz presented information about GLSEN's mission and programs to a packed house of 500 at the Colony Theater on South Beach immediately before the 9 PM film feature. On May 20 GLSEN/Miami will present a workshop on School Issues for GLBT Youth at the 6th Lambda Conference on Miami Beach, as well as hosting a booth at the conference. For more info on the conference call 305/751-7283. >From GLSEN/Miami's recent sponsorship of Warren Blumenfeld's Speakers Bureau Training has evolved SpeakOut South Florida, a tri-county speakers bureau providing speakers, speaker training, and referral for community and advocacy groups throughout South Florida. For more information about the Tri-County Informational Meeting June 10 and/or how to become involved, contact Co-coordinator Marjorie Loring at 954-424-6799 or email mjeaton@gate.net or Co-coordinator Keith Sebins at 954-567-2883 or ks27pc@aol.com. GLSEN/Miami hosted an all-day Safe Schools Awareness Training at MAST Academy on Key Biscayne on April 21 with twenty-six teachers and counselors and a youth panel of ten students. The goal of the workshop was to help secondary educators, particularly middle school teachers and counselors, understand issues facing sexual minority youth, how those issues affect the students' abilities to learn, and strategies and techniques to create more inclusive classrooms and schools. The highlight of the workshop was the youth panel-- 9 of whom are currently in high school -- and their stories of their lives. Incredible! They provided tremendous insight for the middle school teachers who are working to make schools safe for all. This workshop was made possible in part by a grant awarded to GLSEN/Miami by the Dade Human Rights Foundation. Upcoming GLSEN/Miami workshops for May are scheduled at Miami Country Day Middle School and Ransom Everglades Upper School. On June,1, GLSEN/Miami has been invited for its fifth presentation to the Dade Academy for the Teaching Arts on Miami Beach. On June 20, GLSEN/Miami has been invited for the third consecutive year to present to graduate students in School Counseling at St. Thomas University. SAVE THE DATE: May 25, Richard Murphy, will discuss his recent experiences with his work with Ghandi's grandson, Mel Whilte and others to dialogue with Jerry Falwell and conservatives in the Methodist Church. Join us at GLSEN/Miami's new monthly meeting place, the Community Room of the Wellness Center at 306 Lincoln Road on South Beach. Enter through the Fedco Pharamcy on Lincoln. We meet the 4th Thursday of each month from 6:30 - 8 PM. Refreshments are 6:30 - 7PM; program is 7 - 8PM. Some gay and lesbian advocates fear last-minute changes to the regulation made by the state Board of Education on Tuesday could spark an increase of anti-gay sentiment in the classroom.
