Our program is grant-funded to provide health and mental health trainings re: LGBT adolescents throughout NYS. Our director, Dr. Donna Futterman co-authored the book: Lesbian and Gay Youth: Care and Counseling. About me: My name is Danny Carragher, and I have a Master's in counseling psychology and a Ph.D. in clinical/school psychology. My research interests, including my dissertation, involve gay and lesbian issues (in particular, gay youth victimization... for my dissertation, I looked at 18-30 year-old gay men who were out now, but NOT out in high school and asked them what high school was like for them, and how their experiences as non-identified gay youth affected their adult development). I've worked for the Hetrick Martin Institute (a gay youth drop-in center in Manhattan) and for GLSEN (the Gay, Straight, Education Network) as a research coordinator (helping link university folk doing gay research with advocacy organizations). I am currently the coordinator of the Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Health Resource Center (GLAHRC) at the Adolescent AIDS Program (AAP) at the Children's Hospital of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. About the Adolescent AIDS Program: Since 1987, The mission of the Adolescent AIDS Program (AAP) of Montefiore Medical Center has been to serve adolescents living with HIV/AIDS, and adolescents who are at-risk for HIV infection or lesbian and gay adolescents, their families and caregivers. We accomplish this through the three components of our program: (1) comprehensive clinical care (medical and psychosocial; the Risk Evaluation Program - REP), (2) relevant research, and (3) outreach and training for youth, families, and health and mental health providers. Clinical, research, and outreach services are available for the Bronx, throughout New York City, aWestchesterter County. Training services on HIV and adolescents, and by our Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Health Resource Center are provided regionally, nationally, and internationally. The program is funded by federal, state, and private care and research grants NIH, HRSA, CDC, and NYS DOH).The Adolescent AIDS Program - through its expert team of medical and social service professionals and state-of-the-art facilities - fosters a safe and empowering environment. About the Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Health Resource Center: Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adolescents and those who are questioning their sexual identity face additional challenges in meeting their needs for health and mental health care. To address this need, staff at the Adolescent AIDS Program (AAP) at Montefiore Medical Center have developed the first comprehensive Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Health Resource Center (GLAHRC). GLAHRC provides state-of-the-art technical assistance, resource information and training on issues related to the medical, counseling and support needs of LGBT youth and their families for youth, families, providers and advocates throughout New York State. Project goals include: (1) Training providers on assessment, treatment and care of LGBT youth through on-line resources, presentations, conferences, and information creation and distribution; (2) Empowering youth to help address their health care needs by participating in GLAHRC projects as advisers, speakers and resource developers; and (3) Developing an on-line database of medical and psychosocial caregivers supportive of LGBT youth and their families throughout New York state. Our trainings are capable of being tailored to fit many needs. We can do presentations that cover: 1. gay identity development 2. homophobia 3. victimization/isolation 4. mental health issues 5. health issues 6. making health and mental health institutes more gay- aware/friendly 7. HIV ...etc. Now, Neal Hoffman, MD, our clinical director, usually does more of the health/clinical issues with this pop (STD's, HIV, vaccinations...etc.), but we find that for the most part, at least at the beginning, most places need a "GAY 101" re: development and the need for a supportive environment. I'm always updating my PowerPoint presentation, and we have some great articles, books and other resources for people to have and/or buy (Donna Futterman's book, or executive director, Lesbian and Gay Youth: Care and Counseling). Like I said, I know this is a lot, but I want to give you a lot of info. If you're interested in having us be a part of any future trainings, let me know. We're funded to provide training statewide, and are very interested in doing trainings outside of the Metro New York area. While we started by doing trainings to primarily gay and lesbian medical groups, this often feels like "preaching to the choir." Now that we're doing more presentations to wider audiences, I feel that we are reaching the people who need this type of training the most. Hope this helps! COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVES. West Des Moines school officials refused to add the words "sexual orientation" to their harassment policy. Not surprising. What was shocking was the district's claim that adding those words "created a false sense of security" for gay students. Sort of like saying that freeing the slaves would give blacks the mistaken impression that life would be a breeze. Dale later this year, the justices never even mention the word gay. Yet make no mistake: The case is a potential watershed for gay rights. It's only that the case could also have wider impact.
