John Bottone, M.S., Mental Health Counselor, LIGALY This workshop will explore the underlying issues facing GLBT youth and discuss counseling strategies and goals for counselors working with this population. In addition to clarifying underlying client issues, this session will explore how heterosexism influences the counselor/client relationship. Time will, be provided for participants to share their own insights and experiences working with GLBT youth. 2. Dealing With Lesbian/Gay Issues In The English Class Presenters: Marilyn Maxwell, Ph.D., Dr. Darla Smyth, & Lisa Cohere, Hewlett High School This workshop will present a summary of an innovative approach to raising and discussing gay/lesbian issues in the safe intellectual environment of the English class. Using Rita Mae Brown's "Rubyfruit Jungle" as a springboard to investigating censorship issues in education, techniques on how to encourage students to re-search gay/lesbian rights will be provided. 3. Creating Safe Schools For Gay & Lesbian Students: "What Do We Say When We Hear Faggot?" Presenter. Debbi H. Rakowsky, CSW, School Social Worker, R.C. Murphy Junior High School This workshop will address negative school based incidents, harassment, anti-gay jokes, graffiti, and labeling. Suggestions for creating an atmosphere of tolerance within the school building to support students dealing with their own sexuality or that of a parent will be provided. 4. Educational Freedom: What Every Administrator Should Know Presenter: Thomas Kirdahy, Esq., Staff Attorney Nassau/Suffolk Law Services This workshop will explore Title 1X and its application towards GLBT students. Participants will review applicable case law and ways in which a hostile free environment can be ensured for all students. SESSION 2 5. Educational Freedom: What Every Administrator Should Know Presenter: Thomas Kirdahy, Esq., Staff Attorney Nassau/Suffolk Law Services (See workshop description in session I) 6. Sensitivity Training: Teaching In The Age Of Sexual Diversity Presenters: Dorothy McHugh, CSW, Roslyn Public Schools District wide Social Worker, and Ellen Seigel, CSW, Roslyn Public Schools Board of Education President Equipping school personnel with pertinent and accurate information is essential to securing safety for all students within the school environment. This workshop will enable participants to organize and deliver an in-service course in their respective school districts. 7. Substance Use and GLBT Youth: Finding Safety Presenter: Jack Hoffman, CSW, Social Work Supervisor for Quannacut Treatment Center This workshop is designed to enhance the understanding of the issues facing GLBT youth regarding alcohol and substance use. Goals are to increase awareness of abuse and its criteria, educate on clinical treatment considerations, review Suffolk County treatment resources, and explore the presence of internalized homophobia as a critical issue in accessing care. 8. Issues Of GLBT Youth In The Foster Care System Presenter: Becky Klein, Coordinator of Groupwork Services, Green Chimneys Children's Services-Gramercy Residence This workshop will highlight the specific issues and challenges GLBT youth in foster care face. It will address the ways in which Gramercy Residence responds to these young people's needs. SESSION Ill 9. If You Don't Ask, They Won't Tell! How To Communicate With GLBT Youth Presenter: Warren M. Siegel, M.D., F.A.A.P., Director of Adolescent Medicine, Chair of Pediatrics, Coney Island Hospital Often GLBT youth do not readily seek physical or mental health care for fear of rejection. This workshop will explore ways to communicate with GLBT youth to assist them and the worker in developing a trusting relationship. 10. Practical HIV Prevention Strategies With GLBT Youth Presenter: Susanne Smoller RCSW, CASAC, ACSW, Director, Smoller Training & Consulting There are many ways to incorporate HIV Prevention strategies into classroom and community based settings that are low cost and effective, Participants will learn these strategies and gain concrete techniques and resources to take back to their organizations. 11.
