The idea forms part of a package to court the "pink vote" that also includes plans to punish "homophobic" companies and a pledge to explore spending public money on supportive material for gay young people. [Deleted article. filemanager@qrd.org] so they hide behind the issue of child protection." London Times, March 30, 2000 Letters: 'Mixed messages' sent by Section 28 It is very sad that Mr Martin Bowley, QC, President of The Bar Lesbian and Gay Group (letter, March 25), proclaims that he finds it offensive and untrue that his stable homosexual relationship of 15 years is stigmatised by the law as "pretended". The strident clamour for such activity to be treated as valid and as moral as marriage is unwise as it causes vocal opposition, anxiety and offence. Of those who disagree, a number hold strong religious beliefs that such activities are sinful and unacceptable. ANCRUM F. EVANS, Harpley House, Clifton-on-Teme, Worcester WR6 6HG This evening BBC2 has shown two excellent programmes in prime time, the subjects of which were one of Britain's most prominent artists of the 20th century, Francis Bacon, and one of our most prominent poets, W. H. Auden. Homosexuality was openly and intelligently dealt with in both programmes. Indeed, without such discussion the programmes could not have been made. Such programmes demand intelligent and guided discussion in our schools but under Section 28 this is a very risky business for any teacher to entertain. How can we get it into the minds of Baroness Young and her supporters that the cat is out of the bag and that young people demand intelligent and informed discussion on such topics as homosexuality? Or would they prefer such discussion to take place "behind the bike sheds" where all sorts of bigoted arguments are engendered with little chance of being questioned by an experienced moderator? Section 28 must go. If it does not, we are sending our children very mixed messages. They need guidance, not prejudice. ANDREW ARMSTRONG, 36 Florence Road, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Dorset BH5 1HQ ================================================================================= Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 13:28:07 -0500 From: Rita Addessa Subject: Open Letter for publication - request for support Open Letter for publication April 2000 Dear Friends and Colleagues, I write for your timely financial help to reach several critical objectives over the next several months. The first to sustain the Anti-Discrimination and Violence hotline to help people in need of support, advocacy, information and referrals to resolve often difficult situations that arise from prejudice and bigotry. The second to complete the critical Pennsylvania-wide Study of Discrimination and Violence, a research tool that undergirds negotiations with local and state policymakers to reach justice goals, inclusive of the Pennsylvania Civil Rights Initiative. The third to reopen negotiations timely with the Mayor, City Council, and newly appointed Board of Education to obtain their support for the full implementation of Policy 102 (adopted in 1994) to help female and minority youth inclusive of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered youth, through system-wide reform. The fourth to open negotiations with Paramount-Viacom-CBS on the matter of promoting bigotry and prejudice on its airwaves (locally, "Dr. Laura" and others). Why you? Despite significant socio-legal advances, very few foundations will support concerted efforts to help people who remain characterized in mainstream media as social pariahs, as "biological errors," as sexual predators. The Task Force needs the financial and moral support of individuals, of organizations, and of businesses that care, people who will go the extra mile and who will stand up for what is right and just. Please give as generously as you can in this community-wide effort to support civil and human rights. Many thanks. Rita Addessa.
