Conference Overview The Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered (GLBT) Families and Schools is pleased to present this one-day conference examining family culture and its impact on children's development and learning. Through the keynote address and afternoon workshop by Virginia Casper, Ph.D., conference participants will learn how the school experience impacts the development of children of GLBT families, and how schools and families can develop more productive communication and broaden learning environments with the goal of inclusion of all families and safety for all children, regardless of their sexual orientation or that of their parents. Other workshops provide insight into GLBT families and school issues from the perspectives of youth, parents, families in transition, and educators, as well as a discussion of current legislation. Keynote Speaker We are honored to have Virginia Casper, Ph.D. as our keynote speaker . Dr. Casper is a developmental psychologist and teacher educator who has spent a number of years researching communication between lesbian and gay parents and their children's educators. She is the co-author, with the late Steven B. Schultz, of Gay Parents/Straight Schools: Building Communication and Trust. Dr. Casper directs the Infant and Parent Development Program at Bank Street College of Education in New York City. Conference Schedule 8:15 - 8:45 Registration - St. Joseph's Hall 8:45 - 9:00 Welcome 9:00 - 10:15 Keynote Address "Gay and Lesbian Issues in Our Schools: Children's Development, Learning, and Family Culture" Dr. Casper will examine how the children of gay and lesbian-headed families experience the school environment, and how that experience impacts on their development and education. Dr. Casper will offer suggestions to create more productive parent-school communication 10:15 - 10:30 Break 10:30 -11:45 Concurrent Workshops 11:45 - 12:30 Lunch (provided) 12:30 -1:45 Workshop with Dr. Casper Dr. Casper will address a range of gay-related issues for educators working in classrooms from pre-school through high school. Families in Transition A workshop to identify the key issues children of transgendered and transsexual parents face when their families transition. Addressing GLBT Issues in Schools A session to heighten awareness regarding GLBT youth needs in schools and provide concrete ideas to address these concerns. Mandates, State Responses and Legal Issues A session to heighten awareness regarding current national legislation effecting GLBT youth. Love Makes a Family A workshop to discuss the "Love Makes A Family" photo exhibit, currently showing on the St. Rose Campus.
