It isn't. Malicious harassment, whether it is based on race or gender or sexual orientation or country of origin or any other factor, is simply defined as harassment arising from malice. The Merriam Webster dictionary on-line defines "malice" as "desire to cause pain, injury, or distress to another." The dictionary elaborates that malice "implies a deep-seated often unexplainable desire to see another suffer." That's pretty horrific. Certainly it is the scariest form of harassment. But must a harasser harbor this sort of evil intent for us to object to the behavior? NO. Harassment also occurs when, regardless of the offender's intentions, the targeted individual feels harmed and asks the offender to cease the behavior ... and the offender doesn't cease. This is what might be called "callous harassment" as opposed to "malicious harassment." That is, the offender doesn't necessarily "desire to cause pain;" he or she simply has no feeling at all, no sympathy for the targeted person. The Merriam Webster dictionary on-line defines "callous" as 1 a : being hardened and thickened ... 2 a : feeling no emotion b : feeling no sympathy for others." That is different from intending to harm another; it is simply not caring if the other feels harmed. And finally, there is what one might call "ignorant harassment." That's what happens when the offender cannot comprehend the target's hurt or how his or her behavior might have contributed to it. Webster defines "ignorant" as " ... lacking knowledge or comprehension of [something]." Sometimes, an offender truly doesn't realize that people from a targeted group have feelings, just as other human beings do. Even when a targeted individual has said, "Ouch," an offender sometimes can't comprehend how the thing they did or said might have caused hurt. So to recap, there's: * malicious harassment, * callous harassment, and * ignorant harassment. All three stink. It is my guess that ignorant harassment is the most common in schools. And what better place to address ignorance than in schools! We have the power, as educators, to stop harassment, malicious and otherwise. Through education. Let's teach. -- Beth Reis is Co-chair of the Safe Schools Coalition, a public-private partnership whose mission is to make schools safe for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity ***************** ---------------------- to SUBSCRIBE to the Safe Schools Coalition's listserv (avg. 2-3 messages/day), mailto:publications@safeschools-wa.org ... put the word "SUBSCRIBE" on the subject line.
