Date: Saturday, May 20th, 2000. Information on how to attend the conference is at the end of this message. Please forward the message to other interested persons. About the conference: The conference will address issues of interest to both college teachers, and those teaching in primary and secondary schools. Our overriding theme is inclusion, and in that spirit we encourage and welcome attendance from all interested persons: teachers of all levels from elementary through college, students, counselors; persons of all sexual orientations; scientists and humanists. We expect to have at least 100 people in attendance. Our aim is to bring together persons interested in LGBT issues in the schools. The conference will address both the teaching of LGBT issues, as well as the counseling of LGBT students. It will focus on both academics and activism, with the intent to forge a network of educator-activists. In order to foster the contacts among people which is our aim, the conference will be more interactive and participatory than many conferences. After short presentations on the history of LGBT issues in the schools, we will break up into groups on such topics as: o the role of academics and the academy in the larger gay political movement o a case study of how one progressive primary and secondary school fosters an LGBT-affirmative environment o how to integrate sexuality into discussions of race, class, and gender in college classes o the ongoing effort to create a positive environment for students in all eastern Long Island school districts Moderators of these sessions will include representatives from such regional and national organizations as LIGALY (Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth), NGLTF (the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force), and GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network). Time and place: The conference will be held at Dowling College, a four-year private liberal arts college with an undergraduate and graduate School of Education. Dowling is in the New York City suburbs, and is easily accessible by train, plane, or car. The Long Island railroad is an inexpensive commuter train running from New York City to Oakdale, the town in which Dowling is located. Interested in the conference? If we were more technologically literate, we'd have our own web site, but for conference registration we're relying on old-fashioned methods. Apologies. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING THE CONFERENCE: Please send an email message with your full name and your email address, as well as the information requested in the next paragraph, to one of the following individuals: Marty Schoenhals, Associate Professor, Anthropology Department, Dowling College email: MSchoenhal@aol.com OR Suzanne Johnson, Associate Professor, Psychology Department, Dowling College email: bsjoc@aol.com NOTE: Make the subject heading "Dowling conference." In addition please write one or two sentences about yourself: 1) your occupation, or your major, if you are a student, and 2) your reasons for being interested in a conference on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered issues. For example: "I teach sexuality courses in high school and would like to learn how to integrate lgbt issues into my curriculum." 3) Finally, what is one question that you would like to have answered by the time the conference is over? Please be specific, so that we can finalize our plans to best accommodate your interests. After receipt of your email, you will receive a confirmation, as well as an address where you can send the $20 registration fee. The conference will be free for students. If you do not hear back from us within 7-10 days, please re-send your message. (We hope not to overlook anyone, but we want to be sure this doesn't happen.) We look forward to hearing from you! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + To post, send email to QUEERPOLITICS@abacus.oxy.edu + ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ================================================================================ BBC ONLINE, February 7, 2000 http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/education/newsid_631000/631451.stm Anti-gay bullies 'given free rein' Boys who work hard are likely to be picked on Homophobic abuse and bullying is rife in schools because teachers are inhibited by the law banning the promotion of homosexuality, according to research from a leading educational institute.
