ESPA Introduced their 2000 Public Policy Agenda Supporting NYS Legislation: Hate Crimes Law Nondiscrimination (employment, housing and public access) Dignity for Al Students Act (S5775 and A9244) I was very pleased and thankful to hear ESPA's Executive Director Matt Forman announce support the "the Dignity for All Students Act" as part of their 2000 Public Policy Agenda. This is major step towards making NYS schools a safer place for all students, including real or perceived gender, sex and sexual orientation. I discussed the "Act" with Senator Tom Duane the Senate bill initiator and his counsel. Efforts towards Senate passage are being reviewed and we will have more on this in the near future. CSS-NYS once again thanks Terry O'Neill, Assembly Staff Attorney, for drafting the original NY version of the Dignity for All Students Act. Of course, your support efforts across the state are needed. Please pass the word wide and far. We need the support of groups/organizations and individuals. On March 13th ESPA will be conducting their annual Lobby Day. Your participation is welcome and encouraged. This is a day whereby we can personally discuss the issue of anti gay abuses in schools and request legislators' support for the Act in the Assembly/Senate. I will be sending more information on Lobby Day soon. It was a great honor for me to say "hello" and shake the hand of First Lady Hillary Clinton at this event. Funded by a $40,000 grant from the state Department of Education and an additional $5,000 from Boston public schools, the program will hire staff and begin training programs to support gay/straight alliances for students. The program is only the second of its kind statewide. The city of Springfield launched the first program. =============================================================================== Jean Richter -- richter@eecs.berkeley.edu The P.E.R.S.O.N.
