ALERT!! ALERT!! * TONIGHT Governor Davis gives his STATE OF THE STATE speech... * He will announce HIS NEW EMAIL ADDRESS * It's a great opportunity to THANK HIM for signing our proactive legislation last year... * AND ENCOURAGE HIM TO COME OUT AGAINST PROP 22 (Knight Initiaitive) (He is reportedly close to taking a position... a strong showing of support from us would be a very, very good thing...) PLEASE COPY THE LETTER BELOW AND SEND YOUR EMAIL TODAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Send it to: graydavis@governor.ca.gov *********************************************************************** Dear Governor Davis, Thank you for signing bills in your first year as Governor that created California's domestic partnership registry, that protect gays and lesbians in housing and employment, and protect students from anti-gay discrimination! Thank you for standing up for all Californians, including gays and lesbians and their families. Now we are hoping you will do the right thing and stand up against Prop 22, the Knight Initiative. It's divisive, unfair and intrusive... wedge politics at its worst. Such measures in other states have always resulted in increased discrimination and even hate crimes against gay and lesbian people... The Knight Initiative is the equivalent of a legalized hate crime. Prop 22 divides us when Californians need greater tolerance and understanding for one another. Please join Vice President Gore and Senators Feinstein and Boxer in saying "NO on Knight, NO on Prop 22." Thank you - and I look forward to your response... The decision ended a battle that began in August when a group of parents and school board members tried to have Rivers then known as David Warfield fired, contending that she had violated a board directive by allegedly discussing her planned sex change with students. It also closed the books on a suit that Rivers, 44, had filed against the district; she received $150,000, and all charges were expunged from her personnel file. People who otherwise claim tolerance of gays become apoplectic when the subject is discussed around their kids. But there's no need to fear contagion. "Gayness" is not a disease. It won't be spread by a message on a high school bulletin board a message that could literally be a lifesaver to a teen struggling quietly, or desperately, with issues of sexual orientation. I read with interest your article in the Jan 3 edition titled "Reformed curriculum approved". The article states that students are to be taught every aspect of sex. If this is so, will students be taught about homosexuality along with heterosexuality? Your article gives the impression this new curriculum will provide only heterosexual sex education. If so, that would be denying an education to those young boys and girls who find their own sexuality isn't in line with what the curriculum is teaching. Will same-sex relationships be discussed? If not, how will the schools instruct those students who find themselves attracted to someone of the same sex? Will they be ostracised for their feelings of being different? Your article talks of how the new course will cover "the nature of platonic and romantic love, acceptable values and morality, how to deal properly with members of the opposite sex, and human rights law". What about how to deal with members of the same sex; the nature of platonic and romantic love among same-sex relationships? And, whose "acceptable values and morality" are being included in this new curriculum? I am not homosexual, but I accept that homosexuality is a fact of life. The children who will be instructed under this new curriculum will not all be heterosexual. If this new curriculum will in fact teach students "every aspect of sex", then homosexuality needs to be included. Or will the "acceptable values and morality" of those who wrote the new curriculum prevent homosexual boys and girls from getting an equal sex education? I hope not. Donee White ================================================================================ Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2000 08:07:26 -0800 From: MRenGMal@aol.com Subject: Conference on GLBTQ Youth in New York On Monday, February 28, 2000, Green Chimneys Children's Services will sponsor the fourth annual Conference on Working with Gay, Lesbian, Biseuxal, Transgendered, and Questioning (GLBTQ) Children, Youth, and Families to be held at Hunter College School of Social Work in New York.
