WA: Position opening in queer youth services ========================================================= Reply-To: listserver@channelq.com Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 00:00:56 -0800 From: "Channel Q" To: Subject: ALERT: $100,000 Grant Opportunity for LGBT Issues Threshold Foundation New $100,000 Multi-Year Grant Announcement NOVEMBER, 1999 The Threshold Foundation makes approximately $1 million in grants each year to sustain a fragile planet, advance social justice, promote peace and encourage personal transformation. Threshold received a handful of gifts that created its endowment, separate from its funds used for annual grantmaking. This October, the Threshold Endowment Grants Committee created a new grants process to distribute the annual income from the endowment, some accumulated interest and possible contributions from other sources. For each year of this process, the committee will select one topic and make one grant. TOPIC for 2000 For its first cycle, the Committee selected lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (lgbt) rights. Because most donors and foundations find gay issues "too controversial", few philanthropic dollars go to organizations supporting lgbt people. Given the rapidly increasing visibility of lgbt people and their issues, Threshold feels that strategic funding in this area is timely and exciting. Threshold is limiting its interests to three topics - (1) youth issues, (2) legal issues and (3) work between lgbt communities and non-gay people. Threshold recognizes that some organizations or projects focus exclusively on one of these topics; others may combine two or more areas. DESCRIPTION OF GRANT OPPORTUNITY Number of Grants: One Size of Grant: $100,000 total, distributed over three years. Threshold will pay up to $50,000 in the first year to support start-up costs and encourage fundraising for continuing work. DESIRED QUALITIES OF THE GRANT RECIPIENT RADICAL -- The grantee will be pulling on the thread that can unravel an important issue to create permanent change. The grantee might use community organizing, legal action, direct action, civil disobedience or other tactics that may dramatically create change, but may be impossible to fund through most institutional donors. As an example, the successful prosecution of the Nabosney case created an important legal precedent. It warns principals that tolerating violence against students that are, or are perceived to be, lesbian or gay can lead to significant consequences. HEARTFUL -- The grantee will demonstrate a warm, human connection to its immediate and surrounding communities, expressed through a range of possible values and behaviors. The grantee, for example, may demonstrate values not directly connected to their core work, like planetary sustainability or peace making. The grantee may use some form of consensus decision-making or incorporate the non-rational into decision-making processes. Threshold Endowment Grant page 2 COMMITTED TO CONCRETE CHANGE -- The grantee defines its success in concrete terms and is committed to making change in concrete ways. HAS A RECORD OF SUCCESS -- The grantee can demonstrate a clear track record of success within the scale of its chosen scope of work, resources and community. This record would include an ability to be resourceful in mobilizing community support and/or money to sustain its activities. CREATES LEVERAGE -- The grantee can show how this grant award will help attract additional cash, in-kind or volunteer resources from other sources. BUILDS CAPACITY -- The grantee will use this award to build organizational capacity in areas like delivering quality programs, creating desired results, building networks of allies, increasing community visibility and/or fundraising. REVIEW PROCESS November 15, 1999 -- The Letter of Intent form is included with this notice. Prospective applicants can also request it from The Threshold Foundation at (tholdendow@tides.org). December 15, 1999 -- Letters of Intent are due at the Threshold Foundation e-mailbox. February 7, 2000 -- Threshold will invite between four (4) and eight (8) organizations to submit additional material, creating full proposals. This additional material is due at the Foundation e-mailbox on February 21, 2000. March 15, 2000 -- Threshold will contact candidates to schedule an on-site visit, schedule a phone conference or decline the proposal. March 15 - June 1, 2000 -- Evaluation of full proposals July 15, 2000 -- Threshold will award the single grant and notify all applicants.
