I have never seen this type of money spent on opposing a bill that simply aims to protect children from violence and harassment at school. As you may know opposition based out of Sacramento and Anaheim has put inflammatory ads on the radio, taken out full page newspaper ads in targeted members districts, and it appears that they are operating paid phone banks. Recently, they began leafleting church parking lots in targeted districts urging members to oppose AB 222 which they outrageously claim - amongst other things - would allow pedophilia to be celebrated in our schools. It also appears that they have sent every household with a Latino sounding surname in our targeted districts a flier urging them to "Proteja a los ninos del asalto homosexual!" (protect the children from the homosexual assault). The mailer attacks the Democratic Party for supporting the homosexual community and its radical agenda. In addition to the mailer going out in swing districts, it seems to being going out to other Democratic Latino Caucus Assemblymembers who have traditionally supported the Dignity for All Students Act. The clear objective of the flier, which comes out of a small Republican-affiliated Latino organization, is to undermine Latino support for the Democratic Party. In an article about the mailers, the Sacramento Bee indicated that Mike Machado (D-Stockton) and Denis Cardoza (D-Merced) are now both opposed to the bill. The deep pockets of the religious right seem to be turning the tide against us. We need to pull out all the stops and continue to get phone calls and faxes into our targeted members offices, particularly Reyes, Soto, and Correa. Contact information and background on the five targeted members is on the web at: http://members.aol.com/sbaalert/ab222a.html . Additionally, we need to shore up the 40 votes we have in favor of the bill. I have heard that Assemblymember Tony Cardenas (D-Panorama City) who previous voted in favor of the bill may be wavering under the pressure of the religious right. Please take the time now to call Assemblymember Cardenas in his district office at (818) 894-3671 and urge him to support AB 222. A sample phone script is included on the website listed above. You can also fax him a letter of support at (916)319-2139 or e-mail him at Assemblymember.Cardenas@assembly.ca.gov . Assemblymember Cardenas' complete contact information is: Capitol Office: State Capitol, P.O. Box 942849, Sacramento, CA 94249-0001, Phone: (916) 319-2039, Fax: (916) 319-2139 or District Office: 9140 Van Nuys Boulevard, Suite 109 , Panorama City, CA 91402, (818) 894-3671. Also, for those folks living in the Fresno area.... Assemblymember Sara Reyes who says she wants to see all of California's youth safe, but doesn't know if we need explicit protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation, is hosting office hours tomorrow, May 21, at Mosqueda Center, 4670 E. Butler, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. It would be great to get Fresno area folks to tell her in person that you support the Dignity for All Students Act and hope she will take a stand for all of California's children. Reyes office is getting about a hundred phone calls a day in opposition to AB 222, largely from what appears to be paid phone banks. Inflammatory fliers that have been left on cars in church parking lots and sent to residents with Latino surnames in the district. This is our final push! We have less than two weeks to turn the tide in our favor. Keep up the good fight! Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 10:37:32 -0700 From: "Richard, Jennifer" Subject: Sacramento Bee Article on AB 222 To: "'QYLD'" Bills to protect gays targeted By Patrick Hoge Bee Capitol Bureau (Published May 21, 1999) Several conservative groups are running campaigns against a slew of anti-gay discrimination bills in the state Legislature, with two organizations aiming particularly at Democrats in more conservative districts. At least four Democratic assemblymen were surprised in recent days when fliers sent by the Sacramento-based Capitol Resource Institute and a closely linked organization appeared in their districts urging people to pressure them to oppose the bills. One of the key bills named in the fliers is AB 222 by Assemblywoman Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, which Kuehl says would prohibit discrimination against gay students in public schools. That legislation also recently prompted the Anaheim-based Traditional Values Coalition to launch a statewide radio ad campaign urging opposition. Other legislation include bills relating to domestic-partnership benefits and registries, employment and housing bias and non-parental visitation rights. One of the fliers, apparently sent by a small group in Selma called Latinos por la Familia (Latinos for the Family), shows two pictures, one of two men kissing, the other of two men cuddling. The group in the past has had few members and been run by Rosa Ramirez-Roberts, a registered Republican. A message left with the organization was not returned Thursday. Another flier was sent jointly by Latinos por la Familia and the Capitol Resource Institute. Appearing outside churches and businesses in Sacramento, it said the bills in question "would force homosexual behavior on children, families and persons of conscience." Randy Thomasson, the institute's assistant director, said the fliers have been printed and distributed by volunteers. "I don't know how many have gone out," he said. In March, Thomasson also founded a group called the Campaign for California Families, which purchased newspaper advertisements attacking legislators in several conservative Democratic districts, including Assemblyman George Nakano, D-Torrance. Nakano, who voted in favor of AB 222 in committee after it was amended, said Thomasson never contacted him. Nakano said he is sensitive to discrimination issues because he spent four years in internment camps as a child during World War II. Kuehl called the fliers "lies," saying they misrepresented her legislation, which she said would simply prevent discrimination. Assemblyman Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, said a Spanish-language flier targeting him incorrectly stated that he favored gay marriage. Cardoza said he will not support Kuehl's bill. Other Democrats named in the fliers included Assemblymen Mike Machado of Linden and Lou Correa of Anaheim and Assemblywoman Nell Soto, D-Pomona. Correa said he had not decided, but he is against discrimination of all kinds. Machado said he was definitely voting against Kuehl's bill, which Soto said she was "inclined" to opposed. Students at Manchester's West High requested a support group for gay and lesbian teens and were turned down by their principal. Their request is now before the school board. Lessner tosses off this request as a bit of nonsense, since "the last thing they need in such circumstances is a "support group" to add to their confusion by endorsing their supposed sexual orientation." Further, as the author of this piece is a journalist, we would have thought that he could get the facts straight. Among his gaffes, he maintains that "[n]o evidence suggests that homosexuality is genetic," and argues that "it is a myth that homosexuality is untreatable." It is shocking that a staff member of a newspaper in the very same state where Gov. Jean Shaheen has just repealed a ban against gay adoption treats part of his readership with utter contempt and compromises the safety of its youth in a most cavalier fashion. Please let the Union Leader know that this column was offensive, defamatory and dismissive. Contact: o Jim Linehan, Managing Editor, Union Leader, P.O.
