Assembly Bill 107, Assembly Bill 222, and Assembly Bill 26 will extend important legal protections to gay and lesbian Californians. However, the Religious Right has targeted these bills for defeat. Using inflamatory and misleading language, Conservative leaders are attempting to prevent the California Assembly from considering these bills. Help us insure that all Californians receive equal treatment under the law. Please read the description of each bill and then contact the California Assembly Appropriations members listed at the end of this email. Encourage them to vote for these critical bills. For more information on these bills and what you can do to help, please contact: People For the American Way California Office 2852 South Barrington Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90064 Phone: (310) 478-6657 Fax: (310) 478-5857 Email: pfawca@pfaw.org ______________________________________________________________________ ASSEMBLY BILL 222 The California Education Code currently contains a number of provisions that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, age, sex, color and physical and mental disability in public school programs, activities, and employment. AB 222 would add "sexual orientation" to those existing provisions, thus ensuring basic civil rights and equality of treatment for gay and lesbian public school students and teachers. Such protections are desperately needed. As we know from our work in California and around the country, gays and lesbians -- particularly students and young adults -- continue to be the victims of discrimination, and are greatly in need of the fundamental legal protections that the Education Code already provides to others. In fact, studies have concluded that gay and lesbian students are often the victims of harassment and assault and are far more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual counterparts. Please help pass AB 222 by calling members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee today. Assembly Bill 222 will be heard on May 19. ______________________________________________________________________ ACTION STEPS * Call members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee today. Representative Lewis first came to national attention in the early 1960's as a Freedom Rider and as the chairperson of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which he helped to form. He was also a planner and speaker at the historic March on Washington in 1963. Today, he serves as a leader within the Democratic Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives. Following the keynote address, conference attendees will be able to choose from over 65 workshop selections. Although specific titles are yet to be determined, workshop tracks will include beginning and advanced sessions in community organizing, youth organizing, public policy and advocacy, in-school programming and resources, and media. GLSEN is proud to present a special workshop track entitled, Changing Southern Schools. This comprehensive track will examine the ways in which Southern history, culture, and political trends impact our work to create school communities that are free from anti-gay harassment and intimidation. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3 The morning begins with two more workshop sessions, which will be followed by the 1999 Pathfinder Awards Ceremony and brunch. The Pathfinder Awards honor individuals and organizations that have cleared new ground in the fight against anti-gay bias in schools.
