Help get "It's Elementary" shown on PBS ======================================================= From: SARATOGANY@aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 15:37:17 EST Subject: Help Get "It's Elementary" Programmed on PBS locally Msg fwd by: The Coalition for Safer Schools of NYS, PO Box 2345, Malta, NY 12020 (It's Elementary: Talking about gay issues in schools) Subj: Help Get It's Elementary Programmed on PBS locally Date: 3/15/99 2:31:24 PM Eastern Standard Time From: wemfilms@womedia.org (WEM) To: christya@womedia.org Dear Friends, Many of you have contacted us asking when IT'S ELEMENTARY-Talking About Gay Issues in School will be broadcast and how you can help our efforts to get the film seen by as many people as possible. Here's how this broadcast will work: The American Public Television Service will "feed" IT'S ELEMENTARY to every public television station in the country. The programmer at each station will make his or her own decision about whether to use that feed and carry IT'S ELEMENTARY, and if so, what day and time to schedule it. We're hoping that at least 100 stations carry IT'S ELEMENTARY, and that they schedule it in a time slot that will attract media attention and a large viewing audience. Programmers will be making their decisions during March and April for an initial broadcast date sometime in June. You may have heard that several organizations are mobilizing to try and prevent IT'S ELEMENTARY from airing on public television. Sadly, this is indeed the case. The American Family Association and Coral Ridge Ministries, for example, have sent extensive fundraising letters to their numerous supporters urging them to mobilize to stop the broadcasts. Consequently, program directors around the country are receiving scores of calls in opposition to the potential broadcast of IT'S ELEMENTARY. We encourage you to let your local PBS affiliate know that you hope they will not respond to this censorship campaign, and that they will let viewers see IT'S ELEMENTARY and judge it for themselves. This is a critical time for stations to be supported in their decision to air a program that some consider to be controversial -- which is an important role public television should play in today's political climate. The best way to communicate with your local PBS affiliate is to contact the "Viewer Services" department. For your convenience, wešve included the following websites to more easily access the appropriate PBS stations: http://www.pbs.org/voice/stations.html http://www.pbs.org/stations/state.html Or, at the end of this email is a list of email addresses for each station. If would like the snail mail address or phone number for your local station and you are unable to access the websites above, please call our office at 415-641-4616 or email wemfilm@womedia.org and we can help you. If you have seen IT'S ELEMENTARY, you could let the station know how the film has affected you or the audience that screened it with you, and why this film is important for a general audience to see. If you haven't seen it yet, you can tell the station that you are looking forward to seeing it and ask them to let you know what day and time it will be aired. You might want to add that you hope your station will schedule IT'S ELEMENTARY in a time slot which will attract the greatest possible number of adult viewers, particularly parents. Please share this information with friends, colleagues, and family members who live in other parts of the country who you think would be interested in having IT'S ELEMENTARY broadcast in their community. Thank you again for your support. This broadcast of IT'S ELEMENTARY comes at a critical time. With the upsurge in anti-gay hate crimes, particularly attacks on students, there is a greater need than ever for the insight and inspiration offered by the children and teachers featured in IT'S ELEMENTARY.
