Hot off the press: Board of Education unanimously amends proposed harrassment policy to include "SEXUAL ORIENTATION" I just returned from the Board of Education meeting where over 20 groups testified to have the proposed harrassment policy to be amended to include sexual orientation. A well-balanced set of testimonies from advocacy agencies, Department of Health, AFSC, parents, and Gay people provided an easy understanding of the concerns to have sexual orientation covered. It was clear that transgendered, and questioning people will be included in the covereage of the measure. The measure now goes to public hearing stage and then back to Board for final approval. THERE WAS NO OPP0SITION PRESENTED. New Superintendent of Schools Paul LeMeihieu stated that he fully supported the inclusion of sexual orientation. It should also be noted that he also signed a petition supporting hate crimes legislation currently pending in the Hawaii State Legislature ______ Senate Bill 605 (our hate crimes task force developed bill) is planned for decision-making at the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday February 5. There will not be testimony but expected discussion of proposed changes and hopefully passage to the Senate Ways and Means committee. Do good, William E.
