During public testimony in which the City Council chambers was packed in standing room only, educators came forward in support of Karl's integrity. One educator whose interview by the superintendent became a key element in establishing evidence disclaimed the interview as deceptively acquired. The intent was not as supposed, but became instead a tool to discredit Karl's teaching. Others spoke questioning the choice of only two witnesses for interview when many others saw the events and were not questioned. The many speakers were allocated but one minute to state their cases. It was not enough, and the board was not moved to support the outstanding educator. If you are not happy with this reasoning of support for the superintendent and the parents, then you are encouraged to write the members of the school board and tell them so. Write to: San Leandro Unified Schol Board, 14735 Juniper Street, San leandro, Ca. 94579-1299. They also have a web site on the internet under San Leandro Unified School District. To those who have actively support Karl Debro we thank you for your help. If you want more information regarding this case, please reply back to me for more information. ================================================================================ Contra Costa Times, May 13, 1998 Box 5088,Walnut Creek,CA,94596 (Fax 510-933-0239)(E-MAIL: ccletrs@network.com) Gay, lesbian exhibit won't go on display By IMRAN GHORI, STAFF WRITER Antioch -- A photo exhibit of gay and lesbian youths in Contra Costa County won't be stopping at City Hall. The city says it couldn't display the series of black-and-white and color photos at City Hall because of a scheduling conflict. The project sponsor, which approached the city last month, believes the city is afraid of controversy. The art exhibit, which features pictures of and by gay and lesbian youths, debuted Saturday at a workshop against homophobia in Walnut Creek. It began a two-week run at the Richmond City Hall on Monday and will make its way to other cities over the next two months. "The idea of the exhibit is to increase the visibility of gay youths in Contra Costa County and to depict gay youths" as average people living their lives, said Carla Goad, a project director at Center for Human Development. The Pleasant Hill nonprofit center that offers education and support programs for youths and families is co-sponsor of the exhibit. Antioch City Hall regularly features art exhibits in its council chambers. The pieces are chosen by the city's Civic Arts Commission. Ramiro Arosemena, chairman of the commission, said the group wanted to display the art in May or June, and the city already had that time booked up with other exhibits. "We would be happy to accommodate, but we already made a commitment to the other people," he said. Arosemena said the commission might be willing to consider the exhibit after June if the sponsors are amenable. However, he said the city would need to view the art in advance to make a decision. The group did not submit any examples of the exhibit art when it approached the city, he said. Arosemena said the commission would not reject an exhibit just because it might have a gay theme, noting that it has featured exhibits featuring a variety of cultures and minorities. "I think we'll take a look at anything," he said. =============================================================================== Jean Richter -- richter@eecs.berkeley.edu The P.E.R.S.O.N.
