Please Post QUEER YOUTH INTERNSHIPS ANNOUNCEMENT SUMMER 1998 LYRIC is a non profit youth community center providing educational, recreational and peer leadership development activities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth. Since all of LYRIC events are peer-based, most of the following internship positions are for LGBTQQ youth 23 and younger. Please submit a cover letter and resume if available by appropriate deadlines. Please specify for which position you are applying. LYRIC can not provide housing for the period though we will try to help people find summer accommodations. The following internships are available in 1998: Young, Loud and Proud Steering Committee intern: Young Loud and Proud is a youth conference focusing on LGBTQQ youth issues. The conference is planned and produced by people under 25. Last year's conference had more then 400 LGBTQQ youth participants from around the country. We expect at least 500 people this year. The conference consists of informational and skill building workshops, activism trainings, plenaries, an art fair, sports, dance and more. The intern will assume a leadership position as part of the conference steering committee. This position entails working on a team with several queer agencies and other queer youth. The position requires good people's skills and organizational, computer skills, and experience in queer youth activism is a plus. The internship begins on 4/21/98 as a half time position. On 6/2/98 the internship becomes a full time position. The internship ends on 7/14/98. This is a paid internship for $300 a week. Deadline for applications 3/31/98. Women's Health Fair Project Intern: The LYRIC's Women's Health Fair is an annual event that aims to promote the health needs of young queer women. The conference is planned and produced by women in the community. The fair consists of workshops, panel discussions, party, resource fair, sex and health information and more. Last year the fair attracted about 100 young women. The intern will assume a leadership position as part of the Health Fair organizing team. This position entails working with several queer agencies and other queer women. The position requires good people skills, organizational and computer skills, experience in queer women's activism and knowledge of women's health is a plus. Women of color especially encouraged to apply The internship begins on 6/1/98. The internship ends on 8/31/98. Deadline for applications 4/15/98. Summer Program Intern: LYRIC's summer programs include several events. The Summer of Arts program is a 4 - 6 week program consisting of 4 - 6 daily art workshops. Last year the program had 30 people enrolled in one or more of the following: video, writing, self defense, dance and drama improvisation. This year the program will be produced in collaboration with the Harvey Milk Institute and the Eureka Valley Recreation Center. The summer program also includes a 3 day camping trip, outings and daily drop in. The intern will be responsible for running the Summer of Arts program. Duties include outreach, working with participants and instructors, help producing the final show and registration. The intern will also be part of the team that helps put together the camping trip and other recreational activities, new program ideas are very welcome. The position requires good people's skills, organizational skills, and experience in recreation is a plus. The internship begins on 6/30/98 and ends on 8/29/98. The intern will be invited to planning meetings in May and June, though attendance is not required. Deadline for applications 5/15/98. Youth Contingent Intern: San Francisco's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Parade attracts thousands of people from all over the world. Bay Area queer youth agencies collaborate in producing a youth contingent with queer youth from all over Northern California. The project includes planning a float, outreach, building a Bay Area wide network of collaborating agencies and a youth booth at the fair at the end of the parade route. Last year 7 agencies with more then 100 young people marched in the queer youth contingent in the parade. The intern will be the key person in coordinating all the aspects of the contingent. The internship requires a lot of coordination and team work. The character of the float and booth change annually so there is a lot of opportunity for new creative ideas. The internship begins on 5/25/98. The internship ends on 6/30/98. The intern will be invited to planning meetings in May. Though attendance is not required. Applications deadline 5/1/98. Peer Health Educators: The LYRIC HIV Prevention Program has several internship openings for Peer Health Educators. The peer educators will be trained in basic heath and facilitation skills. They will work on projects within LYRIC, encouraging healthy behavior and health related information. The interns will be hired for a period of 3 months. No prior experience required. There will be a stipend of $150 a month. Call Alfonso at LYRIC at 703-6150 Updated for deadline and internship dates Educational Services Intern The Scholastic Needs Assistance Program (SNAP!) offers one-on-one tutoring, GED preparation, open library and tutoring sessions, study socials, college admission advising and help with in-school harassment. In April SNAP! will also provide classes in writing resumes, Internet use, word processing and more. The intern primary responsibilities will include tutoring participants at the High School level in Math or English, staffing open library and study socials, and help to organize and computerize the LYRIC library. The intern will also be able to get involved in program outreach, teaching computer lab related classes, volunteer management and information gathering from colleges. Tutoring experience and/or a strong interest in teaching would be helpful, as would some level of familiarity with using computers. Fluency in Spanish or other languages would be great but not required. This internship is available for 25 - 40 hours a week, and can begin in May or June. Youth Talkline Outreach Intern The LYRIC youth Talkline is expanding from a regional to a statewide service. The Talkline intern will assist in expanding and updating referral database for peer support phone line serving LGBTQ youth 23 and under. Responsibilities will also include networking with existing youth-service agencies to assess and improve their ability to serve LGBTQ youth, and to increase outreach for the youth Talkline statewide. We are looking for someone who is able to work comfortably in a multi-cultural, multi-gender agency. Good telephone communications skills a must. Peer counseling or counseling experience helpful but not required. The internship is minimum of 10 hours a week - time negotiable. This is a non-stipend internship.
