The Markowski-Leach scholarship fund was established by the estate of James Leach in honor of the memory of Leach and his partner, Thomas Markowski. The first scholarship of its kind in the country, the fund was established in the hopes of helping promising gay and lesbian students become positive role models for the community. Over 70 awards have been disbursed since its inception in 1991. Awards for the 1998-99 academic year are $1,000 each. Applicants must have an earned GPA of 2.5 in prior course work (or be eligible for enrollment at Stanford) and be enrolled in one of the three schools for the 1998-99 academic year. The two days of professional development were just one of the goals of the San Francisco Board of Education resolution that was adopted in 1996 and that began to be implemented last year.
