Mindful of the difficulties faced by gay and lesbian high school students and their supporters, PFLAG has offered scholarships for the past several years to graduating high school seniors. The criteria include good academic standing and demonstrated personal or public support of equality and justice for gay, lesbian and bisexual persons. The increasing pressure on high school boards and administrations to recognize the concerns of gay students has led to high-profile controversies, nationally and locally. A few schools have gay/straight alliances, but in most area schools it is still extremely difficult to be perceived as gay or gay-supportive. It is important to PFLAG to encourage gay students and supportive straight students, and to assist them to continue their education. This year PFLAG has increased the scholarships from $500 to $1,000, in recognition of the actual costs of post-secondary schooling. Applicants must be graduating from a public or private high school in San Mateo or Santa Clara County. The deadline for completed applications is April 10, 1998. Further information and applications are available from PFLAG Scholarships at 408-269-8418. Peninsula PFLAG was founded over ten years ago, and is a chapter of national PFLAG. Among their local activities are in-service training programs for middle school and high school faculties and staff. With monthly meetings in Gilroy, San Jose, Menlo Park and San Mateo, the organization provides support, education and advocacy for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, their families and friends. For meeting information call 498/280-8182 or 650/857-1058. ================================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 22:33:25 -0500 (EST) From: Ntanya Lee X-Sender: nrl9@mercury.cis.yale.edu Subject: gay history studyguide Please respond only to NTanya Lee, at nrl9@yale.edu. Transforming the Nation can be used to complement history, social studies, and diversity or anti-bias curricula. We hope this resource will be used in classrooms, youth groups, studygroups, and by anyone seeking to learn about the richness and complexity of American history. PROJECT BACKGROUND: People About Changing Education (PACE) is a nonprofit, New York-based progressive, multiracial organization that publishes School Voices magazine. In 1992, PACE/School Voices Press published Malcolm X in Context: A Study Guide to the Man & His Times. In 1993, PACE played a leadership role in organizing support for a gay-inclusive NYC Board of Education curriculum. As a result of lessons learned during that effort, PACE decided to produce a teaching resource that was both anti-homophobic and anti-racist, and that would be especially relevant to youth and parents of color, who are the majority of many urban school systems. All proceeds from the sale of Transforming the Nation will go to PACE to support similar progressive education projects. This project has been partially funded by the Paul Rappaport Foundation and the ASTRAEA foundation. **************************************************************************** ADVANCE ORDERS & DONATIONS ARE NEEDED TO PAY FOR THE COST OF PRINTING. **************************************************************************** HOW YOU CAN HELP: 1) Be a Transforming the Nation *Supporter.* Send a tax-deductible contribution today.
