LAUNCHES ONLINE NEWS SERVICE WASHINGTON, DC --- February 17, 1998 --- It's Time, America! (ITA) announced today its launching of the It's Time! News Service (ITNS). The purpose of the It's Time! News Service will be to disseminate media advisories and other announcements to various news media and other interested parties, as well as to remail news items and action alerts to interested parties. While the It's Time chapters in various states have realized several significant gains in recent years, the work of the chapters has kept a low profile, allowing some people to believe that ITA's accomplishments are few. The objective of the It's Time! News Service is to rectify that situation, and to build momentum for public advocacy on behalf of transgender and other gender-variant individuals. The It's Time! News Service will carry news items of interest to the transgender and gender-variant communities. This will, by necessity, occasionally include news items of primary interest to other racial, ethnic, religious and sexual minorities. The determining factor will be whether or not the story has relevance for people who express their gender differently. "It is our hope that through this news service we can promote improved communication, understanding and cooperation among all minority groups," said Penni Ashe, ITA's Acting Media Director. Historically, the focus of transgender education efforts has been national in scope, through the work of national organizations. Unfortunately, while these organizations have been effective in changing policy with national and international organizations, the evidence is clear that such efforts have not won over the hearts and minds of Americans. Said ITA National Director Jessica Xavier, "It's time to shift to a new model. We have demonstrated that the grassroots model to public advocacy is effective. Now we need to publicize our efforts in order to capitalize on our successes." - 30 - It's Time, America! has advocated on behalf of transgendered and other gender-variant persons through state-level chapters since 1994. When reposting, please credit the It's Time! News Service (ITNS). To subscribe to ITNS, send email to penn45@ma.ultranet.com. When doing so, please indicate whether or not you wish to receive remailed news. =============================================================================== Date: Mon, 16 Feb 1998 05:19:52 -0600 From: JLSE Organization: Mexican Border Web Projects Subject: JUNTA Subject: Ohio Bill would start Commission on Youth and Suicide Date: Mon, 16 Feb 1998 02:16:56 -0500 (EST) From: Doug Case To: Multiple recipients of list AKRON BEACON JOURNAL Akron,OH February 15, 1998 (http://www.ohio.com) Panel's work may save lives Bill would start Commission on Youth and Suicide to help young people in danger of hurting themselves BY KIM HONE-MCMAHAN AND PAULA SCHLEIS Beacon Journal staff writers [Deleted article. filemanager@qrd.org] -- ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* "CON SAFOS, AMIGOS" Mexican Border Web Page Project http://www.netscorp.net/~jaimel by JUNTA: e-mail Subject: "JUNTA, JUNTA, JUNTA" "A free [school] is one where it is safe to be unpopular." - Adlai Stevenson "Empower Queer Kids - Celebrate Them!" ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ***********JOIN*********** Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network http://www.glsen.org & National Education Association http://www.nea.org/ Gay Lesbian Caucus jerry vath 209 n president ave lancaster, pa 17603 717-392-1162 ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ============================================================ Date: Tue, 17 Feb 1998 16:26:21 -0800 From: Gay Prom Subject: Chip Johnson article/PERSON PROJECT Thank you for your quick response to putting this error ladden article on the newsservice. Unfortunately, Nathaniel Bruno has no clue about the funding for the Lambda Youth Group or the Gay Prom. Of course neither does Chip Johnson since I was never contacted and yet this article went to print. Not one penny of our grant monies goes towards the Gay Prom. The monies for the prom are seeded each year since its very successful first year which was underwritten by a grant from the United Way of Alameda County. Mr. Bruno's tactics are offensive and subversive. He is also targeting Kevin Dowling who is also running for City Council and is the past president of GLOBE (Gays and Lesbians Organized for Betterement and Equality). He made many fundementalist christian remarks against gays and lesbians at the city council meeting June 1995, when the Christian Coalition feeblely organized a presentation against Lambda and the first Gay Prom. I suspect this will only continue this year since FUSD and Mrs. Zilli and now Hayward's Mr. Bruno are in the public spotlight. Either way he is drawing attention to the needs of gay youth and the support they need from adversaries such as himself. On Saturday, April 14, 1998 The Daily Review (Hayward's paper-Alameda Newspaper Group) ran a similar article on the Local News Section, page 12. Mr. Bruno is being given a high profile due to he age and outspoken contriversial nature even though at this time he has not yet filed the official papers for City council office. If individuals want to help they should definately write Chip Johnson at the Chronicle about putting this erroneous information out in the public without checking the facts first. Also anyone interested in helping with the prom or attacks on it may email us at gayprom@dnai.com.
