NY: CSS-NYS defends "It's Elementary" ================================================================ X-Sender: scotts@isl1.ri.cmu.edu Date: Thu, 02 Oct 1997 13:53:39 -0400 From: "Scott A. Safier" Subject: Book on gay male experience during Holocaust >From time to time on the PERSON mailing list, people ask about books dealing with the gay and lesbian experience in Nazi Germany. Recently, someone visited my webpage on this subject, and pointed me toward a book that I had not seen mentioned on this list (or anywhere else). I just finished reading it, and I would recommend the book. Damned Strong Love : The True Story of Willi G. and Stefan K. : A Novel by Lutz Van Dijk, Elizabeth D. Crawford (Translator) List: $15.95 1st Amer Edition, Hardcover, 138 pages,Published by Henry Holt & Co Publication date: June 1, 1995 ISBN: 0805037705 The audience for the book is teenagers and young adults. It describes the true experiences of Stephan K., a Polish teenager who falls in love with a German soldier. Stephan is 16 when he realizes that he is gay and later that year meets Willi on the street. They have a several year affair before Willi is sent to the Russian front. When Stephan tries to write to Willi, his letter is intercepted by the Gestapo and he is imprisoned. He describes his time in various prisons and camps, as well as his trial. The story is very good at describing Stephan's feelings and fears. It is nice that Stephan finds familial support for his relationship, although his lover is "the enemy". The one drawback to the book is that we never learn what happens to Willi (because Stephan doesn't know what happens to him, even as late as 1995 when the book was published). I bought the book last week through Amazon.com, and I'm sure other booksellers also have the book. Scott Safier Pink Triangle Pages: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/scotts/bulgarians/pink.html =============================================================== Date: Wed, 01 Oct 1997 17:04:52 -0400 From: "Jon R. Sime" To: schools@CritPath.Org Subject: Safe Haven sticker URL I received quite a number of requests for the TIFF file I had mentioned... A couple people sent mail to my account at the office, which unfortunately means the mail went through an old, very antiquated mail server which strips out Internet e-mail addresses (I don't know why). For those of you who sent mail that way I would have had no way to respond anyway... sooo, if all of you would pardon this message who don't care for the sticker. Instead of sending a copy to each person, I've tossed two versions up on my Internet account which you can download via the web. I have the TIFF file and a PSD file for those of you with Photoshop. The sticker is meant to be printed 2x2 on 8.5x11" paper at 300dpi. Of course, you can resize it, crop it, change the colors, put in different text... it doesn't matter to me what you do with it. Feel free to use the thing in any way you see fit, free of charge, etc. etc. The graphic is in the public domain, so give it to friends, family, coworkers, whoever. You can even put the thing on real stickers and sell it if you want. Enough of my babbling... here are the URLs: http://www.wizard.net/~wanix/safehavn.tif [3862k] http://www.wizard.net/~wanix/safehavn.psd [706k] I must admit, however, that this is not the same exact sticker that I used at the high school I attended. I lost that file and had to recreate it. Which would also explain for the delay in my reply to the interest in the file. I apologize for taking so long. Tashi Deleg! Jobin of Amsterdam, regarding the award winning documentary film "It's Elementary: Talking about gay issues in school." The film was produced and directed by Academy Award winner Debra Chesnoff together with Helen Cohen. Mr. Jobinís letter and his referenced NY Post scathing attack piece, are each punctuated throughout with misinformation about "It's Elementary"'s intended audience and the film's purpose objectives. It appears that Mr. Jobin has made a biased judgment on this excellent film, without ever seeing it. All students in the film appeared with written permission from their parents / guardians. The film is NOT being shown in schools to elementary students. I have watched "It's Elementary" many times while showing it to religious / church groups, teachers, organizations and the general public. The intended audience is NOT elementary STUDENTS in School. It is intended for viewing by, teachers / school administrators, parents, school counselors, religious congregations, health care providers, education policy makers, PTA's, high school / college and graduate students and anyone who enjoys a good film. "It's Elementary" makes clear: how all children are affected by anti-gay prejudice, how students feel about anti-gay name-calling at their school, what children who have gay or lesbian family members want their teachers and classmates to know, what school is like for gay and lesbian students and what questions kids have and where their ideas come from. This film should be viewed by the intended audience so a qualified personal judgment can be made. The Coalition for Safer Schools of NYS will be showing this film to the public, free of charge, at the following public libraries: Schenectady County Public Library, October 27, 1997, 7pm Albany Public Library, October 30, 1997, 7pm Troy Public Library, November 3, 1997, 7pm CSS-NYS welcomes invitations from religious and organization groups to show this film (videotape version), at no cost. If interested and to make arrangements, please call (518) 587-0176 or write to us at PO Box 2345, Malta, NY 12020.
