This conference is a special project of Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center (LYRIC) in San Francisco. The primary goal the conference is to empower l/g/b/t/q youth. By meeting and learning from other young people, conference participants will be able to build a network from all over the country. We project that 300 to 500 young people will be in attendance. We hope to provide as many information-sharing, skills-building and networking opportunities (as well as social activities!) as we can. For this reason, we encourage any prospective workshop organizers and presenters to submit workshop proposals. Workshop proposals should be received by April 30, 1996. Currently, workshops can NOT be submitted via E-mail. ***To receive more *** information about submitting a workshop proposal, e-mail us at: lyric@thecity.sfsu.edu Please provide us with your: Name Mailing Address Phone # Fax # Thank you for your interest and support, YOUNG LOUD & PROUD Organizers LYRIC is the Lavende Youth Recreation and Information Center, a nonprofit organization located in San Francisco CA. ---------------------------------------------- LEADERSHIP ACADEMY 04/18/96 Dear Friends, I'm delighted to announce the second Alameda County Office of Education Leadership Academy program devoted to the issues of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth Issues to be held Thursday, April 18, 1996, from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the ACOE Building, 313 West Winton Avenue, Hayward, CA 94544-1198. The Leadership Academy is a County sponsored staff development program designed specifically for administrators, but anyone is welcome to attend, no matter what their status (teacher, counselor, administrator, school board member, parent, student). Some school districts are "participating" members of the Academy (they pay a fee to the county to be members of the Academy). Attendees from those districts pay $45 for this particular program. Nonparticipating district attendees pay $60 per person. While you may not be able to be in attendance, you may be able to influence others in your district (principal, counselor, district office adminstrator, etc.) to attend. We are fortunate to have Kevin Jennings, Executive Director of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Teacher Network (GLSTN) as the primary prsenter. Kevin is a dynamic speaker and will be a critical element in making this a meaningful day for all in attendance. Mary Griffith, mother of Bobby Griffith, will also be a participant. Most of you know her from her depiction in Pam Walton's film, Gay Youth, and Leroy Aaron's book Prayers for Bobby. There will also be panel discussions from adults and youth. If you would like to have a copy/copies of the Leadership Academy announcement, please email me, Grant Peterson, directly, providing me with your name and address (telephone and FAX too, if you don't mind) and I will get them in the mail. NOTE: Last year's conference was not as well attended as we would have liked, but good things resulted from it. You can help tremendously to make this one a packed house. Grant Grant F. This resolution states that the schools in Alameda County should assure that the needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students whom they serve, and the students who come from homes with gay or lesbian parents are dealt with in a forthright and sensitive manner. Where do we go from here? This workshop will help administrators, educators, and youth providers define decisive action and implement programs that make a difference for these students. TOPICS: Leading experts from around the country and around the county will provide resources and practices that successfully address the issues of sexual minorities in our schools. Gay and lesbian youth will provide first-hand accounts of their experiences in combating the indignities of homophobia and their exclusion from learning based on their sexual orientation. A panel composed of educators, parents of gay/lesbian youth, and community members who are working to combat intolerance will explore strategies to provide care and support for these members of our school community. OUTCOME: To understand the safety and educational needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth and students from sexually diverse families. To investigate and make recommendations to Implement Resolution 1381, including establishment of a task force, curriculum, and staff development. PRESENTER: KEVIN JENNINGS, founder and Executive Director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Teachers Network (GLSTN) has presented anti-homophobia workshops at hundreds of educational institutions and conferences around the country. He was the principal author of the Massachusetts Governor's Commission report, Making Schools Safe for Gay & Lesbian Youth. Kevin's books include Becoming Visible: A Reader in Gay & Lesbian History for High School and College Students, and One Teacher in Ten: Gay and Lesbian Educators Tell Their Stories. Panels of students, leading educators and supportive women and men from the community will serve as presenters and facilitators. **Again, the person to contact about this Leadership Academy is: Grant F.
