From: Lambdalp@aol.com Date: Fri, 26 Apr 1996 14:17:00 -0400 To: jessea@uclink4.berkeley.edu Subject: Lambda Letters Board Dear Jessea, I am writng to you in hopes that you will help us find one or more youth to serve on the Board of Directors of the Lambda Letters Project. The Board has decided that it is important to expand and diversify with regard to gender, gender identity, ethnicity and age group. It would also be helpful if you would suggest other persons or agencies that I might contact on this matter. The mission of the Lambda Letters Project is to help people write to their legislators, other government leaders and sometimes to private industry on a variety of civil rights issues. The issues we cover are womens's issues, lesbian/gay/ bisexual/transgender issues, AIDS/HIV issues and issues of concern to people of color. Each month we pick legislation or a situation relating to each of those areas. Then we compose articles with background information on the month's chosen topics. We also create sample letters on each topic. The sample letters, and a news letter containing the articles, are sent to our members each month. We ask our members to compose their own letters or to sign the sample letters. In either case the letters are returned to Lambda Letters for counting and delivery to the Congress, the State Legislature, etc. Lambda Letters also sends E-mail alerts on pressing issues and, this year has experimented with Lambdagrams, a telegram like document used when swift input to the legislature is important. The project also has signature gatherers who bring sample letters to meetings and groups where they encourage people to sign the letters. In all these ways, Lambda Letters delivered over 32,000 letters and messages in 1995. In 1996 we have already delivered a little more than 22,000 letters and messages. There are seven members on the current Board, but our bylaws allow us to have as many as twenty one. Three Board members are women and four are men. Two of the Board's officers are women and two are men. Six of the members are lesbian or gay and one is bisexual. Two of the Board members are African American and the rest are caucasion. Our Board members range in age from the early thirties to seventy. We hope to find a minimum of two new Board members whose ages are in the 18-30 year old range. They can be from any part of the state as we will pay mileage or airfare for their attendance at Board meetings. Board members are expected to attend four meetings per year in Sacramento. Usually the meetings last most of one day (a Saturday) but the July meeting usually is for two weekend days. We use the extra day for an annual planning meeting. We also expect Board members to spend between 10 and 20 hours per month on some major support activity for the project. We try to fit the activity to the interests and aptitudes of the individual. However, we are particularly in need of people to work in publicity for the project, fund raising or in composing our monthly letters and articles. The letter and article composers are our Legislative Analysts and we have openings for legislative analysts in the areas of AIDS/HIV and lesbian/gay/ bisexual/transgender issues. I should hasten to add that all of our positions, including mine, are volunteer positions. Also we will certainly consider Board membership for people whose talents are in fields other than the above. Lambda Letters collected over 32,000 letters last year, and this year, because of an improvement in our procedures, we have already collected about 22,000 letters. We expect to collect about 46,000 letters in 1996. We think Lambda Letters is an exciting project. It gives a lot to those who serve on the project as well as being a service to the community. I hope you will be able to help us find youth to serve on our Board. If you like, I can mail you copies of our brochure to use in that effort. I will, of course. be delighted to provide you with any other information that you might find useful.
